![]() Hot stuff
In Steve Geimer's mind, it translates to a hot sauce that embodies the Rainbow Wahine volleyball team. It's one of a trio marketed locally by Arturo's, better known for salsas and tortillas. (The others are Hawaii Warriors Touchdown Hot Sauce and Go Bows B-Ball Hot Sauce, all licensed by UH). While at tradeshows, Geimer, the general manager for Arturo's, saw that other major colleges had their own labels. "I thought it would be a great fund-raiser idea for UH," Geimer said. The biggest challenge was finding a flavor for each team. Volleyball is hot but sweet, combining guava, passion fruit and habanero spiked with lemongrass and ginger. "You can taste the flavors of the islands," said Geimer, who hopes to add sauces for other sports down the line. A 5-oz. bottle retails for $4.99-$8.99 and is available at Petals & Beans, It's Chile in Hawaii, Appliance Parts Co., www.hotsaucehawaii.com or by calling 591-9103.
This week's sign of the apocalypseKFVE's expanded pay-per-view package of University of Hawaii athletic events will include six women's volleyball matches (all four NACWAA matches Aug. 26-27 at Omaha, Neb., and Wahine home matches vs. Washington, Sept. 17 and Nevada, Oct. 8). $65.
No place like domeAs was said in the movie "Field of Dreams," "If you build it, they will come." It is not a cliché when it comes to Wahine volleyball. Hawaii has led the country in attendance the past 10 years, ever since the first full season in the Stan Sheriff Center in 1995. The seating capacity has changed three times since its 1994 opening. It hasn't mattered. They still come ... just more of them.
