Teeing Off

We loved your "Top 10 Golf Tips from Dave Shoji."

The guy is an amazing athlete, besides being a pretty good coach. Does this mean we'll be seeing Shoji on the Senior PGA Tour at some point?

Michelle who?

Like Try?

Enjoy shopping at the Rain-Bow-Tique but wonder why the UH marketing department hasn't come up with fan jerseys along the lines of Texas A&M's "12th Man" support?

There's already "White Out" night for basketball. How about an "8th Wahine/Kane" T-shirt for volleyball?

Grin and Wear It

Mahalo for your great swimsuit issue. "The Men of Manoa" -- featuring the Warrior volleyball team -- was gender equity at its best.

I can't wait for the Rainbow Wahine version. Charlie Wade in a Speedo? I'm camping at my mailbox.

Idaho I Dos

Wahine fans, just wanted to update you on a few things.

Former Wahine team captain Melody Eckmier has a new last name: Studer (pronounced stew - dur).

She was married in June in Idaho to a Vandal! Her husband was the biggest fan of the Vandal volleyball program. Now the question will be, who will the newlywed couple cheer for this WAC season?

Ex-Wahine Jennifer Carey, a bridesmaid at Melody's wedding, is the director of volleyball operations at Texas A&M.

Her biggest task now is overcoming the framed picture of the 1999 A&M Elite Eight team hanging in her new office. Jennifer was the setter on the UH team that was upset that year by the Aggies.

And lastly, former UH volleyball standouts Lily Kahumoku and Maja Gustin are teaming up for Urbino, an Italy series A2 team. Hopefully, Lily's Italian has improved so she doesn't order "hamstring" the next time.

HUNG UP: The only banners hanging in the Stan Sheriff Center are of the four women's volleyball national championships.

Hang 10 ... or More

Our family has attended sporting events at a number of mainland colleges. The rafters of their arenas are filled with banners celebrating everything from league championships to NCAA tournament appearances to All-Americans.

It's a source of pride for the student body, alumni, visitors and recruits.

Why is the Stan Sheriff Center so empty? Who has decided that ONLY national championship teams will be remembered with a banner?

At the very least, the Wahine and Warrior volleyball teams that have made the final four deserve recognition.

But why stop there? Any team -- volleyball and basketball -- that wins a league title should be remembered. Any team -- volleyball and basketball -- that reaches a postseason tournament should be honored.

Long Beach State hangs retired jerseys in volleyball (Tara Cross-Battle, Danielle Scott, Antoinnette White, Misty May, Brent Hilliard).

Surely, UH's NCAA Players of the Year (Teee Williams, Angelica Ljungquist, Kim Willoughby, Costas Theocharidis) are equally deserving.

We'd like to see banners for conference titles, NCAA tournament appearances (final four appearances at the very least), All-Americans and Olympians for all arena sports.

Even if they didn't win a national title, at least each of the teams that did really well -- 1996 Warrior volleyball, and 1995 and 2004 Wahine volleyball come to mind -- we can remember those great seasons with a banner.

Let's be proud of UH's history. Hang 'Em Up!

** Confession time. Except for IdahoBoy's, these are not real
letters. Star-Bulletin sportswriter Cindy Luis had too much
time on her hands this summer.
