National radio audience
awaits young musicians

Young classical musicians are invited to audition for the nationally broadcast radio show "From the Top."

The deadline is Nov. 1 -- 10 weeks away -- but in that time musicians ages 9 to 18 must prepare their pieces and record audition tapes.

Local music teachers are urged to identify students who would be good candidates for the show.

"From the Top" is nationally broadcast on National Public Radio. Last December, live tapings were held in Honolulu featuring four local soloists and a trio. The show returns for broadcasts in Honolulu Jan. 11 and on Maui Jan. 13.

Hosted by concert pianist Christopher O'Riley, "From the Top" features pre-college-age classical musicians, showcasing not only their talents, but the lighter side of their lives as well.

Parents, teachers and children interested in either tapings can download audition forms at the show's Web site, www.fromthetop.org or at the Hawaii Public Radio site, www.hawaiipublicradio.org.

Call 955-8821.

Tickets go on sale for the Hawaii Theatre and Maui Arts & Cultural Center shows on Sept. 15 for HPR and supporting theater members, and Nov. 1 to the public.
