Oahu's Cal Ripken 12-and-under World Series champions were back on the island at Honolulu International Airport yesterday after wrapping up the title with a 1-0 victory over Team Mexico in Aberdeen, Md., on Sunday.




Ho'olaule'a celebrates Kahanamoku birthday

The fourth Duke's Ho'olaule'a, celebrating the 115th birthday of Hawaii's legendary waterman Duke Kahanamoku, gets under way tomorrow with the Converse Hawaiian Open longboard contest at Waikiki.

The week's festivities includes the Hawaiian Airlines Duke's Legends Surf Classic, a five-person team event; Duke's Ocean Mile Swim; the Bud Light Surf Polo Tournament, water polo played on surfboards; and the Waterman Challenge with teams of lifeguards competing in swimming, paddleboarding and outrigger canoeing.

Kahanamoku, Hawaii's first Olympian, won three gold and two silver medals in swimming and a bronze in water polo in Games between 1912 and 1932.

Basketball coaches clinic set for Oct. 8

The Hawaii Basketball Coaches Clinic is Oct. 8 at the Damien Memorial High School gym.

Linfield College coach Larry Doty will be among the speakers at the clinic. Hawaii assistants Bob Burke and Len Scaduto, Hawaii Pacific's Kelly Wells, Chaminade's Matt Mahar, former UH-Hilo coach Jimmy Yagi, and Allen Lum of the Positive Coaching Alliance, are among the other speakers.

Registration forms are available at schools, PAL offices, military bases and City and County of Honolulu recreation centers.
