Hawaiian Electric Co. and Campbell Estate donated $25,000 to firefighters yesterday for their hard work fighting the Nanakuli brush fires last week.
The donation will be split up among about 1,100 Honolulu Fire Department personnel, 100 military and civilian pilots who provided air support, and 30 federal firefighters. It comes out to a $20 gift certificate apiece.
HECO officials said they were especially appreciative of help they received from firefighters who protected their Kahe Power Plant from flames.
"The threat to our Kahe Power Plant was incredible," said HECO President and CEO Michael May during a ceremony yesterday. "That could have been a catastrophic event.
"So there's a great deal we owe to you," he said.
