Ewa Beach clinches
The team beats Iowa 7-3 to secure
a spot in the single-elimination
championship bracket
Myron Enos allowed just one earned run in 4 2/3 innings of relief as Ewa Beach fought off Midwest Region champion Davenport, Iowa, 7-3 yesterday at the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pa.
Before 6,425 fans at Volunteer Stadium, Northwest Region champion Ewa Beach improved to 2-0 in pool play and clinched a spot in the single-elimination championship bracket that begins Wednesday.
Ewa Beach was scheduled to face Southeast Region champ Maitland, Fla., (2-0) today at 9 a.m. on ESPN in the Hawaii team's final pool-play game.
Ewa Beach's success is no surprise to fans in West Oahu. One of them is Mike Victorino, a Little League administrator for leagues from Makaha to Ewa.
"Oh absolutely, that's our team. They became our district team when they won at Barbers Point. Then they entered the state tournament at Hilo and dominated," Victorino said.
"For most of them, that's all they do: play baseball year-round."
Enos allowed five hits in relief of starter Alaka'i Aglipay, who struck out the side in his only inning of work. Enos followed by whiffing 10 Iowa batters. He walked only two.
"If they dominate in the first inning, they pretty much got it locked," Victorino said. "If they can get a lead, they'll pull Alaka'i to save him for the next day."

Iowa rallied for three runs in the top of the seventh with the help of Ewa Beach errors.
"I was really nervous," Hawaii coach Layton Aliviado told LittleLeague.org. "We started making mistakes and they started hitting."
Vonn Fe'ao took the mound to whiff Ryan Cartee for the final out.
Aglipay went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored from the No. 3 lineup slot. Quentin Guevara, who played right and center field, hit 2-for-2 with two RBIs and two runs scored.
Aglipay, Guevara and Fe'ao all homered off Iowa starter Kyle Franklin. Fe'ao socked his homer well over the 205-foot left-field wall. The ball nearly cleared the chain-link fence that borders the ballpark.
On the next pitch, Guevara hit a shot that was nearly identical to the one by Fe'ao, giving Ewa Beach a 6-0 lead.
"They take big hacks," Iowa coach Ed Grothus told LittleLeague.org.
"Home runs win Little League. Mark my words, you watch. Home runs will win these games."
