Academy’s art, food
and wine Showcase
grosses $324,000

Good food, wine, music and art -- what more could be desired? And all for a worthy cause, the Academy of Arts. That's what the academy's 11th Showcase benefit was all about Sunday and why the gross was $324,000. A total of $248,475 was raised from art sales. Sixty percent of that goes to the artists and the remaining 40 percent goes to children's programs at the academy. Some of the top chefs in town cooked special dishes to support the cause. Mapuana Baldwin Schneider, a Maui girl who made good, is the major driving force behind Showcase. She convinced former academy director George Ellis to establish the program. Mapuana, an artist who founded Fine Wine Imports, donates wines for the event. Years ago she was the hula dancer for the Kahauanu Lake Trio. She was also president and a partner of the Hawaiiana Hotel ...

ProjectFocus Hawaii's "Doorways," a portfolio of photo portraits of and by youngsters at Kuhio Park Terrace, opens Thursday, 6:30 p.m., at The Shops at Dole Cannery. The exhibit showcases the ability of young photographers who have been working with pros Laurie Breeden Callies of Baby Face Productions and Lisa Uesugi of Utopia Photography. The women wanted to "give back" to the community and help the youngsters build self-esteem. Entry to "Doorways" is free and open to the public. The exhibit runs through Sept. 25 ... Carlos Santana took 10 people to see 'Ulalena in Lahaina Aug. 12 ...

Murphy's gears up for Warrior Pigskin Pigout

The 10th Murphy's Warrior Pigskin Pigout in support of UH football will be held Thursday, starting at 5:30 p.m. The party covers a block of Merchant Street on which part of Murphy's Bar & Grill stands. The event began when Don Murphy and friends teamed up to assist the UH football program. It has grown to a major pre-season tradition. Tickets are $100. That includes dinner and a silent auction with 200 goodies up for bid, including restaurant gift certificates, trips and many sports treasures. "Just meeting (defensive) coach Jerry Glanville is worth the price of the ticket," Murph said. Call Don directly at 754-1502 or ring up Murphy's at 531-0422 to order tickets. Go Warriors! ...
