Fire Capt. Emmit Kane said the man was shoreline fishing in Kahala with two other men near a public access at Hunakai Street in Kahala. One of the men disappeared, and the other two thought they saw him in the water, so they jumped in to look for him, Kane said.
The three became separated, and one of the men swam to shore and called for help at about 7:40 p.m., Kane said. Fire rescue personnel found one of the men 200 yards offshore inside the breakers, Kane said.
The man, in his 40s, had swallowed a lot of water and nearly drowned, but his vital signs were good and he was in serious condition, the EMS supervisor said.
Fire rescue personnel found the other man underwater at 8:40 p.m. He was pulled from the water unconscious and airlifted to Hunakai Park, where rescue personnel attempted to revive him. He was taken to the Queen's Medical Center where he was pronounced dead, the EMS supervisor said.
The suspect and the victim were involved in an ongoing dispute when police said the suspect stopped his car on the street fronting the victim's home at about 2:30 a.m. and fired at the victim but missed. The suspect then sped away and the victim notified police, who later went to the suspect's home and arrested him for second-degree attempted murder. The suspect was later released pending an investigation.
The suspect allegedly returned to the couple's Wahiawa home drunk at 2:40 a.m. and began punching the victim. The suspect then grabbed a knife and chased after her husband and allegedly tried to slash him.
Police were called and arrested the suspect for first-degree terroristic threatening.
The victim was identified as Kaimana Kepa of Paradise Park. He was pronounced dead at 11:34 a.m. at the Queen's Medical Center, where he had been flown Tuesday in critical condition.
Police said the boy was running across Makuu Drive between 31st and 32nd avenues when he was struck around 4 p.m. by a Mazda sedan going makai driven by a 22-year-old male. The injured boy was taken to the Hilo Medical Center and then flown to Queen's.
Police have initiated a standard negligent-homicide investigation into the death and have ordered an autopsy to determine the cause of death.
