Hawaii jobless rate still lowest in nation

For the third month in a row, Hawaii's unemployment rate stands at 2.7 percent, state labor officials said yesterday.

Hawaii has had the lowest unemployment rate in the nation this year, with no other state lower than 3 percent for the past several months.

The national rate also was unchanged from the previous month at 5 percent, according to the state Department of Labor and Industrial Relations.

Charity cruise raises $250,000

Norwegian Cruise Line said it raised $250,000 during a July charity cruise aboard the Pride of America, the second U.S.-flagged passenger ship in the company's growing Hawaii fleet.

The money raised on the charity cruise will benefit three local nonprofit organizations, Child & Family Service, the Council for Native Hawaiian Advancement and Kapiolani Children's Miracle Network.

Shidler buys Arizona buildings

The Shidler Group said it has closed on the purchase of assets that include a landmark commercial office development in Phoenix for an undisclosed price from the Praedium Group.

Included in the portfolio acquisition is the City Square development, which includes three high-rise office towers and other amenities. Shidler plans to invest $10 million to improve pedestrian areas and accessibility.

» Century 21 All Islands has appointed Allen Perkins broker-in-charge of its new Hilo office. He will be responsible for supervising more than 17 agents. He has more than 10 years experience in real estate sales and property management.

» Charter Funding has hired Jennifer Musso as its East Oahu manager. She previously served as a North American Mortgage Co. loan processor and originator.

» Atlas Insurance Agency Inc. has appointed Sharon K. Ohata claims consulting services vice president. She will be responsible for overseeing complex workers' compensation claims and serving as client consultant. She most recently served as vice president of John Mullen and Co.'s workers' comp department.

>> Shell Hospitality Inc. has appointed Linda Anthony as hospitality regional vice president for Hawaii. She will be responsible for directing the resort operations at the company's five resorts in the state. She has over 20 years experience in the hotel industry.

» Japanese Guide to Hawaii-Ai has hired Ron Gates and Linda Kinuhata. Gates most recently served as Premium Inc.'s account director. Kinuhata previously worked for Jalpak International. They will replace senior account representative Peter Henriques, who will leave to pursue a career in financial services with Morgan Stanley.

» Hilton Waikoloa Village has appointed Evangeline Sobrepena human resources director. She began her career at the company's Anchorage Hotel in 1993. She has over 20 years experience in the hospitality industry.

» Hawaii Self Storage has promoted Shaun Salvador to Pearl City facility manager and Steve Hatayama to Salt Lake facility manager. Both will be responsible for managing day-to-day operations for each location.

» The International Council of Shopping Centers has appointed four new officers for Hawaii: Barbara Campbell, state director; Anne Murata, state operations chair; Ann Kutaka, government relations committee chair; and Debra Medeiros, state retail chair.

» Kahala Senior Living Community Inc. has appointed Charles Roy Kelly to its volunteer board of directors. He is Outrigger Enterprises Inc.'s vice president of marketing for special markets. He previously served nine years as a Straub Hospital physician.
