She had an MRI on Tuesday that revealed a torn anterior cruciate ligament.
"The effect of this injury won't be known for one to two weeks," said UH trainer Jayson Goo. "Studies have shown 5 percent of people with an ACL (injury) can still play."
Williams has never redshirted and would be eligible to apply to the NCAA for a medical redshirt year should surgery be necessary.
Williams played in 55 matches her first three seasons at UH. She became the full-time starter at center midfield last year in a 2-1 road win over Southern California.
She has taken 39 shots in three years, but has not scored. However, three of Williams' four career assists came on game-winning goals.
