Hawaii falls in American Legion regional

Sierra Vista (Nevada) denied Hawaii a berth in the American Legion World Series with a 6-1 win yesterday in the championship game of the West Regional in Las Vegas, Nev.

Drew Leary allowed seven hits in a complete-game performance to send the Nevada team to the World Series in Rapid City, S.D.

Neale Asato drove in Hawaii's lone run in the fifth inning.

Kasey Ko hit .429 in the tournament to lead Hawaii. Ko and Asato drove in six runs each over the six games.

» Pearl City scored three runs in the top of the seventh inning and held on for a 6-5 win over Canada in the Little League Senior League World Series (ages 15-16) in Bangor, Maine.

Pearl City trailed 4-3 entering the final inning. Kellen Ushijima tied the game with an RBI single and Nainoa Tampos added a two-run single to help Pearl City improve to 3-0 in the tournament.

Pearl City closes pool play tomorrow against host Bangor.

» Pearl City improved to 2-0 with a 4-3 win over Fort Worth (Texas) yesterday in the Little League Junior League World Series (ages 13-14) in Taylor, Mich.

Alika Pruett hit a two-out, three-run homer in the bottom of the seventh to lift Pearl City. Pitcher David Lee earned the win.

Pearl City plays Fort Wayne (Ind.) today.

» Kalani Lagoc-Crawford struck out eight in a one-hit shutout of Meridian (Miss.) yesterday as the Oahu Stars advanced to the championship round of the Cal Ripken 12-and-under World Series in Aberdeen, Md., with a 12-1 win.

Oahu plays Calvert County (Md.) tomorrow.

Fujikawa, Kaneko claim junior golf titles

Tadd Fujikawa and Ayaka Kaneko won the boys and girls titles at the State Junior Championships yesterday at The Club at Hokuli'a.

Fujikawa's par on the fourth hole of a playoff with Sean Maekawa gave him the boys championship. Both players finished the 36-hole tournament at 2-over-par 146 and birdied the first three playoff holes before Fujikawa closed it out.

Alika Bell won the boys 13-14 division at 153.

Kaneko finished at 157 to win the girls 15-18 division and the overall girls title. Kristina Merkle won the girls 13-14 division and was one stroke behind Kaneko at 158.

Hawaii kayakers earn gold

The Hawaii Canoe and Kayak Team finished third overall and first in the junior competition at the USACK Sprint Nationals held Aug. 9-13 in Seattle.

Every member of HCKT won at least one gold medal in the event and the team won the Black Anvil Award by racking up 134 points in the junior class.

Pat Dolan won gold in each of the eight events he entered. He claimed the Donald Dodge Memorial Award as the winner of the senior men's K1 1,000-meter race and the Greg Barton Award for winning the junior men's race as well. Dolan and Eric Abbott shared the Beachen and Van Dyke Memorial Award in the senior men's K2 1,000-meter race. Peter Newton and Chris Ball won the Gene Krawczyk Trophy by winning the K2 500-meter event.

Other multiple gold-medal winners were Abbott (six), Ball (four), Kai Chong (two), Ben Creps (three), Dustin Gaessner (three), Kilty Inafuku (two), Allison Trecker (two), James Farnum (two), Stuart Gaessner (six), Newton (two) and Nathan Rice (four). Brenden Donahue, Robby Kelly and Blane Chong won one gold each.

Paddleboarder to attempt Kauai crossing

Chris Owens will attempt to paddle across the Kauai Channel this afternoon. He is scheduled to depart Mokuleia at 5 p.m. and expects to arrive at Nawiliwili Harbor about 24 hours later.

This will be Owens' second attempt at crossing the 89-mile channel. Gene Smith completed the crossing in 1940 and is believed to be the only person to have achieved the feat.

Stroke play championship opens Sunday

The Aloha Section PGA's Stroke Play Championship will be held Aug. 21-24 at the Mauna Kea Golf Course of the Big Island.

The 54-hole event features 42 professionals competing in championship, senior and super senior divisions for a total purse of $22,500.

John Lynch will attempt to win a third straight championship division title. Larry Stubblefield has won the senior title the past five years and will compete in the championship division this year.

Teams sought for baseball tourney

Youth baseball teams are invited to enter the Triple Crown Hawaiian September Clash to be held Sept. 2-5.

Play will be held in seven divisions, ranging from 9-and-under to 16-and-under with a limit of six teams per division.

A registration night will be held Aug. 25 at Central Oahu Regional Park. The deadline to enter is Aug. 26.
