Signs at park in
Nuuanu were illegal

Question: Can you find out what the red, white and blue sign at the mauka-most corner of Nuuanu Valley Park at Pali Highway and Puiwa Road is for? It has the word "COP" on it. It is a relatively small sign.

Answer: It turns out that both the "COPS security systems" sign and a separate Boy Scouts sign were posted at the park without permission.

Checking on your query, officials found the two nonauthorized signs.

The "COPS" sign appeared to be randomly placed by an unknown person or persons, said Rosalind Young, West Honolulu district manager for the city Department of Parks and Recreation.

Officials at the Boy Scouts office near the park were advised that their sign needed to be removed, she said.

Q: Do you know which agency is responsible for issuing driving records? I need to get a copy of my driving history for car insurance purposes. Do you have a phone number and address of the right state or county agency?

A: You can get a copy of your driving record from the state Traffic Violations Bureau.

Call 538-5500 for information. Copies are $7 each.

In Honolulu you can get a copy of your driving abstract by going to the Traffic Violations Bureau, 1111 Alakea St., second floor, or by sending a self-addressed, stamped envelope with a money order or cashier's check, payable to District Court, to cover the cost of each copy. No personal checks are accepted.

The request should be mailed to 1111 Alakea St., Honolulu 96813.

Q: I have a complaint about Oceanic Cable's Program Guide Channel 12 "Zap2it": Why must they play "local music" 24 hours a day instead of a variety of music styles as in the past? Most of the music is locals trying to borrow styles from reggae, country, jazz, rhythm and blues, etc., or in the Hawaiian language most people don't understand. I usually just hit the mute button when I check the program guide.

A: This is a case of "you can't please all the people all the time."

Call Oceanic Time Warner Cable's customer service office at 643-2337 to make your musical preferences known.

It's just a matter of "going into the control room and changing the dial" to determine the musical accompaniment to the program listings, said Sandy Davis, Oceanic's director of customer care.

But for now, there is no plan to change that format "because we are a local company," she said.

Davis noted, "We do take customers' comments, and we have gotten customers who want to have us put on the local music because we are a local company."

When there was a less local flavor to the music in the past, "we had customers who say, 'Why don't you put it on the Hawaiian channel?'" she said. In fact, "There are customers who like to leave it on this channel and clean their house."

In the meantime, if there are many people requesting a change, a change will be considered.
