Hawaii American Legion team wins regional

Hawaii defeated Arizona 5-3 yesterday to win the American Legion Region 8 baseball tournament in Las Vegas yesterday.

Chassis Moody led the Hawaii offense with two hits, and Allen Komori earned the win by scattering nine hits in eight innings. Reliever Eric Muraoka finished up with a scoreless ninth.

Hawaii (21-3) went 4-0 in the tournament and moves on to play in the American Legion World Series in Rapid City, S.D., Aug. 19-23.

Pearl City captures World Series opener

Pearl City defeated Guam 5-3 in 10 innings in the Little League Senior World Series opener yesterday in Bangor, Maine.

Shannon Liu and Chad Quillopo hit RBI singles in the top of the 10th for the victory.

Jeffrey Domingo had three hits and Rorry Nakayama and Jason Rasa had two hits each for Pearl City. Rasa also earned the complete-game win.

UH track team earns national award

The University of Hawaii women's track and field team was one of 50 NCAA Division I programs to receive All-Academic Team honors from the U.S. Collegiate Track Coaches Association.

Under coach Carmyn James, the UH squad had a 3.01 combined grade-point average last season.

Two Rainbow Wahine earned All-Academic honors -- Patricia Gauthier (3.92) and Dana Buchanan (3.36). Gauthier is the school record holder in the pole vault and Buchanan is the school record holder in the 1500 meters.

Kailua Bay paddling challenge coming up

The 11th annual Kailua Bay Men's Iron Challenge, a canoe paddling race, is slated for Aug. 27 at Kailua Beach Park at 9 a.m.

Host Kailua Canoe Club is defending its title from a year ago. Lanikai Canoe Club, the 2003 winner, is also entered in the event.

Aloha State Games basketball on tap

The Aloha State Games is holding its Street Sports Basketball Battle at Manoa District Park.

The event is new to the Aloha State Games. Tournament organizers will give a season's supply of Gatorade to the winners of the high school-age male and female divisions and to the winner of the street division.

USTA Cardio classes coming up

The United States Tennis Association Hawaii Pacific Section will offer free cardio tennis classes in September and October.

The classes incorporate tennis into aerobic exercise. For more information, call 955-6696, ext. 29.

Lahaina to host Front Street Mile

Youth runners are invited to enter the fourth annual Runners Paradise Front Street Mile to be held in Lahaina on Sept. 17.

The event will feature age-group competition for youths, open and masters division races and the Elite Men's Mile.
