Slack-key lessons

Leading up to this weekend's 23rd Annual Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar Festival are four daily workshops and performances starting Wednesday at the Outrigger Waikiki Beach Hotel.

From 9 a.m. to noon each day, one-hour workshops will be led by slack-key guitar master Ledward Ka'apana and Kimo Hussey on ukulele.

After a lunch break, workshops begin again at 1 p.m. with slack-key guitarists Jeff Peterson and Yuki Yamauchi, Hawaiian songs with Ipo Kumukahi, hula with Karen Aiu and banjo with Paul Togioka.

Free performances start at 8 p.m.

Lecture on land

The Judiciary History Center presents a free lecture on historical Hawaiian land conveyance documents and "the stories they can tell."

Victoria Creed and E. Mahoe Collins will speak from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the King Kamehameha V Judiciary History Center, 417 S. King St.

Collins, an abstractor for the Department of Land and Natural Resources, has 20 years' experience examining conveyance documents. Creed, president and founder of Waihona Aina Corp., has examined more than 50,000 land documents. Seating is limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Furry friends benefit

The Hawaii Animal Sanctuary is hosting a garage and plant sale to raise funds for food, medicine, veterinarian visits and supplies for abandoned and abused animals.

The sale will be held from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at 603 Hahaione St. in Hawaii Kai.

Items for sale include clothes, knickknacks, accessories, plants, books and more. All proceeds will go toward animal care.

Donations of cat, dog and rabbit food will also be accepted.

An affair for the arts

Take a walk on Saturday for the benefit of art education at Hauula Elementary School. The Hauula Artists Guild is hosting an Art Walk from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., between Sacred Falls State Park and Kim Taylor Reece's Gallery.

Tour galleries such as Kahaunane Woods and Lance Fairly; pick up items such as jewelry from Beach House Creations (pictured); visit craft tables set up by residents at their homes.

A portion of sales during the walk will go to the school for art programs and supplies. Call 293-1611, ext. 1.
