RESTAURANT REPORT

Dinner and wine

The sous-chef is the No. 2 person in the kitchen, often overshadowed. But the Pineapple Room brings sous-chef Brandon Hamada to the foreground Friday with a "Winez & Grindz" dinner.

The menu: Pan-Seared Onaga (with Henri Perrusset "Macon Farges" Chardonnay 2003), Butter-Poached Kona Lobster (Champalou "Vouvray" Chenin Blanc 2004) and Kiawe-Grilled Maui Cattle Co. Beef Tenderloin (Neyers "Pato Vineyard" Zinfandel 2003). Mary Respicio, pastry chef de partie, will provide a Dessert Trio featuring Kona coffee mousse, chocolate chip cake and mint fudge.

Cost is $60, $80 with wine pairings. Call 945-6573.

A second Winez & Grindz dinner on Aug. 26 will feature chef de partie Galen Hironaka.

Summer send-off

The Sheraton Moana Surfrider bids goodbye to summer with a "Summer Time Seafood Festival," tomorrow through Saturday.

The Banyan Veranda restaurant will offer a dinner buffet featuring oven-baked slipper lobster tails, Hawaiian seafood bouillabaisse, gazpacho with bay shrimp, an iced seafood bar and steamed clams made to order. Adding some turf to the surf is a prime rib carving station.

Cost is $52. Seatings are 5:30 to 9 p.m. Call 921-4600.

Nothing doing

The Wrath of Grapes Wine Club at Indigo Eurasian Bistro focuses on the theme of not having a theme at its 6 p.m. Aug. 23 session.

John Doty of JMD Beverages will lead the way through a "Seinfeld"-like tour of nothing in particular -- two California chardonnays, two zinfandels and two sakes from Japan.

Cost is $20, including light pupus. Call 521-2900.

Grand opening

The Waikoloa Beach Grill is throwing a grand-opening party on Thursday, with a portion of the proceeds going to the Waikoloa Foundation for its programs preserving native Hawaiian culture and environment.

Chef-owners Stephen Tabor and David Brown are planning food stations showing off dishes such as veal marsala, beef rib eye and lamb kebabs. Entertainment will be by Nani Lim Yap and Halau Na Lei O Kaholoku.

Cost is $49.

The restaurant is on the Waikoloa Beach Resort, overlooking the first tee of the Beach Course. Call 808-886-6131.
