Artistic excellence

The Honolulu Japanese Chamber of Commerce will open its 27th annual "Commitment to Excellence" art exhibition and sale Tuesday at the Academy Art Center at Linekona School, 1111 Victoria St. More than 600 art pieces are entered each year by artists, for one of the state's few juried exhibitions. About 125 pieces are selected for the show.

In addition to the juried selections, the exhibition also presents works by featured artist John Koga, and several invited artists. This year they are Satoru Abe, Reiko Brandon, Sean Browne, Vicky Chock, Satoko Dung, Dorothy Faison, Charles Higa, Anne Irons, Ron Kent, David Kuraoka, Rochelle Lum, Hanae Uechi Mills, Rick Mills, Mary Mitsuda, John Morita, Marcia Morse, Fred Roster, Mamoru Sato, Stan Tomita, Cora Yee and Doug Young. The late Tadashi Sato will also be honored in memoriam.

This marks the first year that Servco Pacific will be presenting a new award of $1,000, the Servco Award of Excellence, for the most outstanding art work in the show. In addition, Servco Pacific has agreed to purchase $5,000 worth of work from the show, marking the first time the HJCC has received a monetary commitment of this nature from a sponsor.

Exhibition hours are from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tuesdays to Saturdays, and 1 to 5 p.m. Sundays through Aug. 26.

For more information, contact the HJCC at 949-5531.
