The 70th birthday of the U.S. Social Security program is officially tomorrow, but a birthday celebration hosted by the AARP and the Meals on Wheels program came a few days early at the Susanna Wesley Community Center in Kalihi. Meals on Wheels senior participants shared a cake yesterday with "Happy Birthday Social Security!" printed on it. Also taking part in the celebration were U.S. Sen. Daniel Akaka; Bob Calvert, the acting Honolulu district manager of Social Security, standing behind and to the right of Akaka; and Barbara Kim Stanton, wearing red, AARP state director.

TEACHERS EMBARK FOR THE
NORTHWESTERN ISLANDS
CRAIG T. KOJIMA / CKOJIMA@STARBULLETIN.COM
Teacher Cobey Doi was greeted yesterday by Capt. Scott Kuester, Lt. Commander John Caskey and Ensign Sarah Jones, right. Doi and nine other educators embarked on a 10-day trip to the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands aboard the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration vessel Hi'ialakai. The seven women and three men will become students -- learning about the geography, history and natural wonders of the most remote part of the state. They will also get a chance to go snorkeling among coral reefs and on shore at French Frigate Shoals' Tern Island. Read yesterday's 'Teachers At Sea' report for more details.
