Lajola into fifth round at USTA National

Dennis Lajola of Aiea swept Ryan Smith 6-0, 6-2 in the fourth round of the 16 singles tournament at the USTA National Championships in Kalamazoo, Mich., yesterday.

Lajola is the top seed and faces No. 9 Jared Pinsky today. Lajola is also in the quarterfinals of the doubles tournament after teaming with Nathanial Schnugg of Medford, Ore., to beat Waylon Ching and Allen Tsang 6-2, 6-4.

Colin Fujishige of Kaneohe and Skyler Tateishi of Kailua bowed out of the doubles tournament with a 6-4, 6-3 loss to Brennan Boyajian and Zach Hunter.

Sasada earns spot in club pro championship

Brian Sasada of Wailuku finished with a 1-over par 145 to win the Aloha Section PGA Club Professional Championship at Puakea Golf Course yesterday.

Sasada earned a spot in the national tournament at Verona, N.Y., next year along with Kevin Hayashi of Mauna Kea resort and host professional Paul Ito. Sasada won the tournament on the third hole of a playoff against Hayashi and Ito.

Oahu Country Club's Andrew Feldman finished fourth and is the first alternate.

Wilton to assist USA men's volleyball team

Hawaii volleyball coach Mike Wilton has been invited to help coach team USA at the North, Central America and Caribbean Volleyball Confederation (NORCECA) Championship in Winnipeg, Canada, beginning Sept. 11.

High McCutcheon is the head coach for the team. Wilton will focus on game-planning and scouting during the tournament.

Tickets on sale for 'Manoa Maniacs'

Hawaii football and women's volleyball season tickets are on sale for UH students at the Stan Sheriff Center box office and by phone at 944-2697.

UH students can purchase season tickets of $30 for football and $70 for women's volleyball. They can also purchase a "Manoa Maniacs All-Sports Pass" for $35 that provides students admission to eight UH sporting events along with a shirt and a membership card.

Individual tickets, which go on sale Aug. 29, are $5 for football and $6 for women's volleyball.

Pearl City 1 win away from Senior World Series

Nainoa Tampos drove in four runs and Jeff Domingo added three RBIs to help Pearl City beat Arizona 14-4 in the Senior Little League's West Region tournament at Beaverton, Ore., yesterday.

Pearl City will play Southern California today for the right to compete in the world series at Bangor, Maine, Aug. 14.

» Kean Wong went 3-for-4 and Randall Iha added two hits as Hilo dropped Lexington 11-4 in the Cal Ripken World Series for 10-year olds at Russellville, Ark., yesterday.
