Additional Zipperlane
briefing set

Question: Regarding drivers coming in from the Leeward side who use the Zipperlane exit just past the Radford Drive Overpass onto the Airport Viaduct: With the new extension opening next week, I notice there is an onramp to the Zipperlane prior to Radford Drive and an exit onto the viaduct closer to the Nimitz and "Hwy 78" exits. Can Leeward drivers leave the Zipperlane at the new exit, or will they continue to use the existing one? Second, traffic coming into the Zipperlane using the new onramp near Radford will have to cross into the left lane to continue onto the Nimitz contraflow lane. Other than posted signs, what additional safety features are going to be in place? The state Department of Transportation has to explain this better to avoid confusion and accidents next Monday and Tuesday.

Answer: The Department of Transportation plans to hold another briefing before the three-mile Zipperlane extension opens Monday, because it also felt "the message (was) not really getting out about the changes," spokesman Scott Ishikawa said yesterday.

As earlier announced, the Zipperlane and Nimitz Contraflow Lane will be open weekdays from 5:30 to 8:30 a.m., except state holidays. Extending the lane will provide one continuous 15-mile route for carpoolers from Central Oahu to downtown Honolulu.

The current entrance for the Nimitz Contraflow Lane near the end of the H-1 Airport Viaduct will be closed, beginning Monday, for safety reasons.

Ishikawa again laid out the scenario:

» To use the Zipperlane, at least two people -- including the driver -- must be in the vehicle.
» Aiea/Pearl City drivers -- for the first time -- will be able to enter the Zipperlane near the Radford Drive Overpass. There will be a half-mile area for vehicles to merge with oncoming traffic.
» Zipperlane drivers coming in from Central/Leeward Oahu will still be able to get off at the current Zipperlane exit near the H-1 Airport off-ramp, or continue along the extended Zipperlane and go directly into the Nimitz Contraflow Lane .
» The current entrance for the Nimitz Contraflow Lane will be closed, beginning Monday, because it would create a dangerous merging situation, as you mentioned.
» Drivers are asked to drive cautiously while everyone gets used to the new route.

Large directional signs were being installed along the route yesterday morning about the upcoming changes, Ishikawa said.

When charities ask for donations on TV or publications, they never seem to mention if they are tax-deductible. The response would be larger for donors who have limited charitable funds and prefer the deductions. -- No Name
