‘Hula on the Beach’
aims at world record
Star-Bulletin
Every pair of lovely hula hands is welcome in an attempt to form the longest continuous hula line ever, on Aug. 20.
ResortQuest Hawaii is sponsoring "Hula on the Beach," in celebration of the Honolulu Centennial, and is hoping to draw thousands of dancers to Waikiki Beach for the record-setting event.
The hula line will begin at Kuhio Beach and stretch as far as possible along the sand toward Ewa.
The dancers will sway to Neil McKay's "I Fell In Love with Honolulu," sung by Mayor Mufi Hannemann.
Cox Radio Hawaii will play the song at 4:30 p.m. simultaneously on Hawaiian KINE 105.1 FM and KKNE 940 AM. Hula participants are asked to bring a battery-powered radio to create a beach-long sound system.
Event organizers have contacted Guinness World Records and are awaiting word on whether the event will be officially recognized, but plan to proceed no matter what.
Dancers may be of any level of hula experience, but must pre-register and be in line at 4 p.m. Hula costumes or casual Hawaiian attire and flowers are recommended.
Pre-register via e-mail to ikaikacomm@hawaii.rr.com by next Wednesday, Aug. 17. Include your name, birth date and age, address, telephone numbers and e-mail address.
Halaus and other groups must provide similar information for all members, plus the name of a contact person.
Registration on the day of the event will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Aston Waikiki Beach Hotel, lobby-level shopping arcade.
Don't know the moves? Free workshops will be held beginning Saturday to teach the "I Fell In Love with Honolulu" motions. The free lessons are:
Saturday: 10 a.m. at Bloch Arena Gym, Pearl Harbor Naval Station.
Next Wednesday: 7 p.m., Kapolei Hale
Aug. 19: 10 a.m., Aston Waikiki Beach Hotel, poolside, for hotel guests only.
