Mililani Prep wins ASA tournament

The Mililani Prep softball team won twice yesterday to capture the ASA Western National Tournament in Portland, Ore. It's the first time a team from Hawaii has won an ASA 18-and-under national tournament.

Sarah Weisskopf struck out seven to lead Mililani Prep to a 4-2 win over the California Sorcerers in the first game. Tina Noga hit a two-run homer and picked up the save.

Noga then came back to toss a six-hit shutout in the championship game as Mililani defeated the California Haze 1-0. Anita Manuma's two-out double in the first inning scored Liane Horiuchi with the decisive run.

Pearl City rolls in Little League regional

Alika Pruitt allowed four hits and struck out seven to lead Pearl City to a 2-0 win over Lake Oswego (Ore.) yesterday in the Junior League (ages 13-14) Western Regional at Bond Field in Forest Grove, Ore.

Pruitt and Jordan Casarez drove in runs for Pearl City, which improved to 4-0 in the tournament. The team next plays Douglas (Ariz.) tomorrow.

Ramos captures boxing title

Gina Ramos of Kawano/Tiki Ent. Boxing Club won a decision over Mercedes Larrazolo of Pampa, Texas, to win her age group at the Ringside International Championship. Ramos, a National Junior Olympian and the first female boxer from Hawaii to win a major national championship, won the age 15-16, 90-pound open division.

In other finals involving Hawaii boxers, Jada Pereira (Waianae) defeated Madison Villa of Wichita, Kan., in the girls 8-10, 60-pound division; Dido Rodrigues (Waianae) lost to Nathan Burton of Chicago in the age 11-12, 70-pound novice division; Jonathan Dinong (Waianae) defeated Victor Altamirano of Moreno Valley, Calif., in the age 11-12, 106-pound novice division; Bruno Escalante (East Oahu, Waimanalo) defeated Marin Mercado of Fresno, Calif., in the age 15-16, 112-pound novice division.

Thompson and Primacio win ESPN challenge

A birdie on the 18th hole gave Taki Thompson and Raymond Primacio a victory in the ESPN National Golf Challenge Hawaii regional final yesterday at the Turtle Bay Resort's Arnold Palmer Course.

Thompson and Primacio finished at 1-under 71 in the amateur two-person better-ball competition to qualify for the national finals, set for Nov. 14-15 at the Bali Hai and Royal Links golf clubs in Las Vegas. The tournament will be televised on ESPN2.

Sam Rodriguez and Tom Goodbody finished second, one stroke behind the winning duo.

Larry and Erainia Watanabe won the net division with a 63 and also earned a place in the national finals.

2 former champs to appear at Maui event

Former WBA heavyweight champion Tony Tubbs and former IBF junior bantamweight champion Rolando Bohol are scheduled to appear as special guests at the Oct. 8 Mayhem on Maui pro boxing card at the Lahaina Civic Center.

The main event features defending champion and two-time former world champion Vince Phillips of Las Vegas against former WBF international welterweight champion Reynaldo Pelonia of the Philippines for the WBC Continental Americas welterweight title.

Maui's Dat Nguyen, Kona's Kaleo Padilla and Honolulu's Ilima Vicente, Kuulei Kupihea and Justin Mercado are scheduled to fight on the undercard, subject to approval by the Hawaii State Boxing Commission.
