Warriors rally to win national titleThe Hawaii Warriors overcame a late four-run deficit to defeat the Cincinnati Flames 5-4 in the championship game of the Continental Amateur Baseball Association 9-and-under World Series on Friday in Charles City, Iowa.Trailing 4-0, the Warriors rallied to score four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Reid Kimura went 1-for-3, knocking in the tying run. Seth Kinel drove in the winning run in the seventh. Hawaii's Larry Tuilete was named the tournament's most valuable player, and Joshua Inouye won the batting title. Hawaii ended the tournament with a 9-0 record. » Kurt Poentis threw four innings and Edwin Izumigawa closed out the game to lead Pearl City in a 13-1 rout of Nevada at the Junior Little League (ages 13-14) Western Regionals yesterday.
Manuma powers Mililani Prep over CrushersSara Weisskopf and Tina Noga combined to pitch a five-hit, 6-1 win over the Utah Crushers yesterday at the ASA 18-under Western Nationals in Portland, Ore.Valana Manuma drove in four runs, hitting a double and home run, to help Mililani Prep stay undefeated in pool play. Mililani Prep plays undefeated Southern California today.
Team Bahamas wins billfish tourneyTeam Bahamas won the 46th running of the Hawaiian International Billfish Tournament held this past week in Kona.Malindi Game Fishing Club of Kenya came in a close second in the five-day tournament, which ended on Friday. Malindi finished 13 points behind Bahamas with 2,137 points. Kona native Carlton Taniyama was named top skipper with 3,085 points.
Hawaii sprinters place at national meetKaneohe's Blaine Bastatas tied for the best time in the 13-14 Boys 100-meter dash at the Hershey Youth Program National Track and Field Meet yesterday in Hershey, Pa. Despite his time of 12.13 seconds, Bastatas placed second. A protest has been filed regarding the decision.Bastatas was the highest finisher among six Hawaii finalists participating in the meet as a part of the Pacific Southwest Regional Team. Blake Asing of Kailua placed third in the 9-10 Boys 50-meter dash, while Kayla Taulapapa took fourth in the 9-10 Girls 100-meter dash.
QB Club to honor Okino, KonoGolfers Cyd Okino and Stephanie Kono will receive the Sportsperson of the Month awards for June and July at the Honolulu Quarterback Club tomorrow.Guest speakers include Dennis Agena and Miles Akamine of the Dennis Agena Youth Basketball Clinic, UH assistant soccer coach Derick Kato and golfer Casey Nakama. The program starts at noon following an 11:30 a.m. luncheon at the Pagoda Ballroom. The public is invited to attend.
