"The Discovery of the Palau Islands"
By Dr. Paul W. Dale
Rosedog, $17
Of course, it's actually the "European" discovery of Palau under discussion here. Dale has bowdlerized and simplified a 1700s account of the islands' first major contact with the West, making it easy to read, if not too authentic in tone and flavor.

"The Hawaiian Bat, Ope'ape'a"
By Marion Coste, art by Pearl Maxner
University of Hawaii Press, $12.95
A pleasant, if somewhat wordy, book for kids with easily digestible biology science courtesy advisor Theresa Cabrera Manard.

"Visual Maul" and "Visual Hawai'i"
Photographs by Douglas Peebles
Mutual Publishing, $22.95
There are credits here for "text" by Jessica Ferracane and Derek Paiva, but I guess they're talking about the captions on Peebles' endless supply of pretty pictures. Although these are nice books, they all seem to blur together after awhile.
