UH slammers break tradition, hit road early

The University of Hawaii men's volleyball team is heading north to open its exhibition schedule this fall.

The Warriors open with four matches against the University of British Columbia on Oct. 7-8. UH will play morning and evening matches against the hosts.

Hawaii will also play UC Santa Barbara in exhibition play. The Warriors host the Gauchos on Oct. 28, and play them the following night at Kahuku High School's Thomas G.S. Walker Gymnasium.

The spring schedule opens on Jan. 7 with an alumni match. The regular season begins with matches at UC Santa Barbara on Jan. 13-14. The 12th annual Outrigger Invitational will be held Jan. 18-20. Hawaii's guests include Penn State, Ohio State and UCLA. Complete schedule at lower right.

UH Wahine swimmer places 6th

Hawaii swimmer Melanie Schlanger placed sixth Thursday night in the finals of the 100-meter freestyle at the ConocoPhillips Summer National Championships in Irvine, Calif.

Schlanger, an incoming sophomore, posted a time of 56.60 seconds. In the preliminaries, she had a time of 56.29, half a second faster than her previous best.

Pearl City rolls on in LL regional

Pearl City posted wins over Alaska and Montana at the Junior Little League (13-14) Western Regionals this week.

Alika Pruitt pitched a complete game as Pearl City topped Alaska 7-2 on Wednesday.

Bryson Nakamura socked four hits, including two triples, and amassed five RBIs in Pearl City's 15-4 rout of Montana. David Lee and A.J. Johnson each hurled three innings, and Nakamura pitched the seventh.

Pearl City meets Nevada this morning in another pool-play game.

Kaikamahine win again at ASA

Jessica Ghazali struck out four as Kaikamahine defeated the Comets of Nevada 2-1 yesterday in the ASA 16-under national tournament at Sioux Falls, S.D.

Kaz Masutani and Kai Masutani each went 2-for-3 at the plate.

Ghazali went 4-1 in the tournament. Kaikamahine finished the tourney 4-2.

In another game yesterday, Kaz Masutani hit 4-for-5 in Kaikamahine's 4-3 loss to the Storm (Nebraska). Kylie Ahlo went 2-for-5.
