ORPHANS FEEL PULL

A farewell event for four orphans visiting from Japan, who have been guests of the 27th Infantry Division Wolfhounds, was held yesterday at Schofield Barracks. Kidai Shibata, 11, above left, and Mitsuo Yamamoto, 12, second from right, are staying with Dan Shires and his family, which includes son Peyton, 6. Two girls, Junna Atsusaka and Yukiko Matsuda, are staying with the Ervin family.

Yesterday's event featured a competition between the 2nd Brigade, 1-27th Infantry Battalion and the 3rd Brigade, 2-27th Infantry Battalion. The tug of war is shown at right.

A boogie-boarder got a taste of the wild Sandy Beach shore break yesterday. Surf along Oahu's east-facing shores was expected to remain at 4 to 6 feet today, with locally higher sets throughout the day.

The White Coat Ceremony for incoming students at the John A. Burns School of Medicine was held yesterday evening at the Hawaii Prince Hotel. At this event the 60 incoming students were presented with their white coats in a traditional ceremony held at medical schools across the nation. Student Hazel Abinsay, middle, received help with her coat from Dr. Ranjini Kandasamy, left, and Dr. Ronald Morton.
