12 acres donated for
Kapolei school
Home builder D.R. Horton and Campbell Estate have teamed up to donate 12 acres of land valued at $1.2 million as the site for a new public elementary school in fast-growing Kapolei.
D.R. Horton, which merged with Schuler Homes, will make improvements to the site to the tune of $1 million and contribute $1.6 million toward school construction. The donations were announced this week.
Depending on legislative funding, the Department of Education plans to open the new school around 2009, adding a fifth elementary school to feed into Kapolei middle and high schools.
D.R. Horton is making the contributions in connection with its December 2004 zoning approval for Mehana, a new housing development in Kapolei that will have more than 1,100 single- and multifamily homes. The first homes are expected to be complete in 2008.
