New bishop reappoints isle officials to postsNew Catholic Bishop Clarence Silva has reappointed the top administrators of the Honolulu diocese to positions they held under the former bishop, the Most Rev. Francis DiLorenzo.Silva named the Revs. Thomas Gross and Joseph Grimaldi vicars general and confirmed Grimaldi in the position of judicial vicar, head of the canon law office. He reinstated attorney John Ringrose as chancellor, the Rev. Gary Secor as vicar for clergy, and vicars for the following geographic areas: the Revs. Halbert Weidner, East Honolulu; Terence Watanabe, West Honolulu; Michel Dalton, Leeward Oahu; William Mattimore, Windward Oahu; James Berry, Maui, Molokai and Lanai; and Anastacio Postrano, West Hawaii. Vicars for East Hawaii and Kauai have not yet been named.
Liliha church plans annual 'takeout luau'The congregation of United Church of Christ in Liliha is already working on its popular annual "takeout luau" to be staged on Aug. 20.Boxed servings of the 11-course Hawaiian feast will be available from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at a drive-through station at the church, 467 N. Judd St. Tickets at $18 may be reserved by calling 536-8418. Five dollars of the ticket price is tax-deductible. The proceeds will benefit the Pacific Gateway Center, a nonprofit agency that provides employment and training assistance for immigrants.
Concert to feature works of Keith HaugenSinger Keith Haugen will present a concert of his compositions at an Aug. 20 concert at Kilohana United Methodist Church in Niu Valley.Tickets for the 7 p.m. concert are $10 and may be reserved by calling 783-9060. The event will benefit the Rita Thompson Music Scholarship Fund, which provides annual tuition grants for instrumental music students. Current scholarship recipients will perform with Haugen. They are Evan Lin, Momilani Elementary School; Casey Kawahara, Highlands Intermediate School; Sandra Tang, Moanalua High School; Blaise Tom, St. Louis School; and Michelle Morimoto, a home-school student. Haugen's compositions include Hawaiian, country and patriotic songs which have been recorded by other entertainers including Ohta-san, Led Ka'apana, the Patriots and Rhonda. He has received awards for his music, including the 2001 Aloha Spirit Award of the Chamber of Commerce of Hawaii and a first prize in the Ho'okuku Mele competition sponsored by the Royal Hawaiian Band.
5-day retreat explores meditation in daily lifeTwo visiting teachers will apply the Buddhist practice of sitting in mindful meditation to common activities such as shopping, cooking and cleaning in a five-day "On the Cushion, Off the Cushion" retreat next month.Thynn Thynn, a Theravada Buddhist teacher from Graton, Calif., and Grahame White, a Dhamma teacher from Australia, will present lessons on maintaining mindfulness in daily life, Sept. 17-22. The sessions will be from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily at the Palolo Zen Center, 2747 Waiomao Road. Vegetarian lunches will be provided. Sept. 2 is the deadline for registration. St. Patrick's alumni sought for celebrationSt. Patrick's School is searching for its alumni.The Catholic elementary school in Kaimuki wants past students and teachers to join the celebration of its 75th anniversary. The festivities will begin Sept. 2, which will be declared St. Patrick's School Day by Mayor Mufi Hannemann. The proclamation will be read at the 7:30 a.m. campus flag-raising ceremony. Mass will be at 9:30 a.m. at St. Patrick's Church. Students and faculty will celebrate the day with birthday cake and ice cream. The campus will be open to the public on Sept. 3 for a White Tent Sale of used clothing, toys, books and other items from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Donations are being accepted at the school office, 1124 Waialae Ave. Alumni and teachers will be honored Sept. 4 at an 11 a.m. Mass in the church. The ninth annual Alumni, Student and PTA Luau and Silent Auction will follow at 12:15 p.m. Tickets are available at the office. Alumni are asked to call 734-8979 with information about themselves and their former classmates. People with photographs from past events are asked to share them; they will be returned. The celebration will continue at the school's fifth annual fund-raising "Gala Dinner and Silent Auction" April 28.
