Bruggemann-Chen advance at Night Doubles

Second-seeded Michael Bruggemann and Erich Chen beat No. 7 seeds Chris Leong and Michael Wojnarowicz 7-6 (2), 6-2 last night in the quarterfinals of the Kailua Night Doubles Tournament.

Bruggeman and Chen won the event in 2003.

In another quarterfinal played last night, No. 6 Jim Somerville and Wei-Yu Su defeated No. 4 Jan Tribler and Stefan Pampulov 5-7, 7-6 (3), 7-6 (4). Last night's final match between third-seeded Malino Oda and Johnny Rosetta and 15th-seeded Bruce Nagel and Art Lambert was not finished at press time.

In tonight's semifinals, fifth-seeded Taylor Bedillion and Chris Lam play the winner of last night's late match at 6 and Bruggemann-Chen play Somerville-Su at 7:15. Tomorrow is a rain date, with the final slated for 7 p.m. Saturday.

Hawaii slammers named to Fab 50

Jordan Inafuku, Spencer McLachlin and Kawika Shoji were named to Volleyball magazine's Top 25 Underclassmen in this month's issue.

McLachlin, a 6-foot-5 Punahou junior-to-be, was the Star-Bulletin Player of the Year in 2004. Shoji, a 6-3 setter from Iolani, was a close second in the player-of-the-year voting by coaches and media. He is also a junior.

Inafuku, a 5-10 outside hitter for Kamehameha, was an honorable-mention All-State selection last year as a sophomore.

Hawaii boxers advance

Bruno Escalante and Kawika Tangjian Jr. advanced with victories yesterday at the Ringside International Tournament in Kansas City, Mo.

Escalante (East Oahu/Waimanalo) decisioned Hector Miranda of Chicago in a 112-pound division bout.

In the 119 weight class, Tangjian (Kawano/Tiki Ent.) defeated Marcus Cooper of Little Rock, Ark. by decision.

Both boxers are in the 15-16 age groups.

All other Hawaii boxers received a bye into the quarterfinals.

ESPN Challenge this weekend

The Hawaii regional finals of the ESPN National Golf Challenge will be held Sunday at the Arnold Palmer Course at Turtle Bay Resort.

Tee time is 8 a.m. Eighteen teams will compete for a trip to the national finals in Las Vegas. The event is an amateur two-person, better-ball format with gross and net divisions.

The national finals will be televised on Nov. 14 and 15 on ESPN2. The event is a benefit for the V-Foundation for cancer research.

Aiea softball falls to Florida squad

West Pines (Fla.) scored six runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to down Aiea 10-1 yesterday at the Amateur Softball Association 14-under national championship tournament in Owensboro, Kent.

Aiea will play Kentucky today.

Pearl City Little Leaguers win opener

Shannon Liu fired a one-hitter as Pearl City defeated Utah 12-2 Tuesday in the opening round of the Little League Western Regionals.

The game was called after five innings due to the 10-run mercy rule.

Liu was helped by Pearl City's nine-hit attack. Jeff Domingo went 3-for-3 with four RBIs, while Kellen Ushijima was 2-for-4 with two RBIs.

The Senior Division (15-16) team will play Alaska today.
