New agreement stalls cancer center plans

The planning process for the University of Hawaii's Hawaii Cancer Research Center and clinic in Kakaako has stalled a fifth time.

The Hawaii Community Development Authority, the state's Kakaako waterfront governing body, entered into a new agreement yesterday with UH, granting it continued exclusive negotiations for the cancer center site.

"It's like an option," said Daniel Dinnell, HCDA executive director. "We won't talk with anyone but the University of Hawaii about this land."

The new agreement grants UH an extended option with conditions. By Sept. 30, UH must come up with a permanent parking plan, as well as the financial means, for the cancer center and medical school. UH also must select a developer for Phase II of the medical school and pay all common area maintenance invoices by the same date.

As part of the agreement, UH also has agreed to vacate the Pacific Biosciences Research Center no later than Dec. 31, 2006.
