50th state now has 50
Starbucks coffee shops

Hawaii's 50th Starbucks coffee shop opened Tuesday at the Henry Street Shops in Kailua-Kona on the Big Island.

A new Jamba Juice store also opened in the same complex on Saturday, becoming the 100th store established by the locally based operator of the two chains, Cafe Hawaii Partners.

The company plans to double the number of its Hawaii Starbucks locations within five to seven years and has signed 11 leases for new locations of Starbucks and 10 for Jamba Juice.

Cafe Hawaii Partners operates four companies, including Cafe del Caribe, which has 10 Starbucks in Puerto Rico and Florida, and JJC Florida LLC, which has a dozen Jamba Juice locations. It employs more than 2,000 people and has logged $100 million in sales in the past 12 months.

Blazing burners

Eleven island restaurants are doing double-duty on one of the busiest nights of the week this Saturday, when Iolani School celebrates its 10th annual "Touch of Iolani" scholarship fund-raiser.

Restaurants including Roy's and Sansei are participating. Not all the chef-owners are alumni whose arms could be twisted, although Lance Kosaka, executive chef at Alan Wong's, did grad from the school.

The event includes a silent auction. Sales of the $60 tickets are being handled by the school office at 943-2322.
