Gouveia is gone

The former Hawaii quarterback will
serve as a student assistant again

One of the Hawaii football team's two high-profile student assistants will be back with the Warriors when preseason camp opens Friday. The other is an intern with an NFL team this fall.

Former UH quarterback Nick Rolovich returns for a second season assisting by tracking statistics of the quarterbacks, among other duties.

Rolovich just finished a two-year contract as backup quarterback with the San Jose Sabercats of the Arena Football League. He plans to graduate from UH this December.

"I'm a free agent right now. When school's done I'll look for other (football) opportunities," Rolovich said.

His brother, Jack Rolovich, is a third-year sophomore quarterback at UH who will join the team when school starts later this month.

Former Waianae, BYU and Washington Redskins star Kurt Gouveia also served as a student assistant at UH last year (it was his second stint). Gouveia, back from coaching in NFL Europe, is an intern this season with the Atlanta Falcons.

Gouveia's son, Landon, walked on as a freshman slotback at UH last fall, but has left the team and returned to his family's home in Virginia.

Gouveia played well in spring camp, but did not crack the two-deep at slotback going into the fall.

Jason Ferguson, Davone Bess, Ryan Grice-Mullen, Patrick Olchovy and Nate Ilaoa are the main contenders to replace Chad Owens, Gerald Welch and Britton Komine.

UH's first practice is Friday, 4-6 p.m. at the school's grass practice field. All practices listed below are open to the public.
