Ogawa 37th at Optimist junior tournament

Sean Ogawa of Kapaa, Kaui, ended the second round with a 155 for 37th place in The Optimist International Junior Golf Championships at the PGA National Resort and Spa in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.

The third round begins this morning and a cut will take place before the forth and final round. Scores can be tracked online at www.optimist.org.

Byrnes to headline Full Contact Showdown

Steve Byrnes will defend his middleweight title at Full Contact Showdown on Sept. 3 at Kahuna's Sports Bar & Grill Ballroom on the Marine Corps' base in Kaneohe.

Byrnes is stationed at the base and earned the title when he defeated Aaron Rose by rear naked choke July 3.

Kaipo Kalama, Ray Seraille, Mike Leonguerrero, Justin Holcombe, Austin Hernandez and Kyle Miyahana are also expected to be on the card.

Hawaii karate students bring home medals

The Hawaii team -- of 46 students -- won 121 medals including 52 golds USA National Karate Championships in Charlotte, S.C., last week.

Maria Ocampo, Ruddy Pedro, Bradley Nishibata, Kawika Robertson, Brooke Yorita and Ryan Weinman will represent the United States in Montevideo, Uruguay, in the Junior Pan-American Championships at the end of August.

Beirne, Easter win spearfishing title

Tanay Beirne of Waipahu and her teammate, Brandi Easter, won first place in the Spearfishing National Championships at Kimberling City, Mo., last week.

Individually, Beirne took second place with a 21-pound Drum, and she broke records with a 17-pound Gar.

Beirne will represent Hawaii in the World Championships, which will be held in Portugal in September 2006.
