RESTAURANT REPORT
Dining around the islands

First-place ribs

The rib-roaring champion at last weekend's Nuuanu Brews, Blues and BBQ street fair was Sunset Grill, which won the People's Choice Award by a resounding 85 percent of votes cast.

The official judge's tally was much closer, with Sunset Grill edging out Sam Choy's by just 1 point. Others that put their ribs forward were Henry Louis, Dixie Grill and Side Street Inn.

The contest was sponsored by Murphy's Bar & Grill, with the public invited to taste and vote for $15, to benefit the Hawaii Children's Cancer Foundation.

KAHALA MANDARIN
Kona-raised Maine lobster is the "surf" in Wayne's World's Surf and Turf.

Seafood fest

Hoku's in the Kahala Mandarin Oriental plans a seafood dinner promotion, Wayne's World -- Delights of Hawaii, Thursday through Aug. 3. The Wayne in question is executive chef Wayne Hirabayashi, who is assisted by executive sous-chef Joshua Nudd.

The chefs' concept is to pair seasonal local products with fine imports. For example, the Surf and Turf includes grilled mushrooms from Hamakua and Maui onion tempura with Okinawan sweet potatoes, Kona Maine lobster and American Kobe-style beef.

Wayne's World dishes have been added to the menu along with suggested wine pairings offered by the glass. A slimmed-down version of Hoku's regular menu will be also be available.

Hoku's is open for dinner 5:30 to 10 p.m. daily. Call 739-8780.

Beyond lobster

Also celebrating seafood is Red Lobster, in a Summer Seafood Feast.

The featured dish is Catfish New Orleans, a fillet seasoned with Cajun spices and topped with shrimp in lemon-butter sauce.

The menu also includes Jumbo Coconut Shrimp, Crab Alfredo, Broiled Sea Scallops and Grilled Rainbow Trout.

Oahu's Red Lobster is on Ala Moana Boulevard. Call 955-5656.
