Concert honors birth of Mormon founder

A "Festival of Music" by choral groups will be presented at 7 p.m. today at the Honolulu Tabernacle of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at 1560 S. Beretania St.

The free concert by 200 singers is a celebration of the birth of church founder Joseph Smith 200 years ago. Choirs and choral groups from seven wards include a Tongan choir, children's, men's, women's and mixed choir groups.

Parking is available in the parking structure next to the tabernacle.

Talk explores work of Mormons with whalers

The Bishop Museum will present a Research Seminar Series at 4 p.m. Aug. 11 on "The Mormon Voyage of the Whale Ship Timoleon: Launching Latter-day Saint Missionary Work in the Pacific."

Brigham Young University professor Fred Woods will narrate the seminar using first-person journals and discuss the impact the missionaries had on some of the whalers, who modified their behavior in the presence of their missionary passengers.

The seminar is a monthly presentation that takes place the second Thursday of each month.
