Kaiser prescription information offered

Kaiser Permanente suggests alternatives for members to obtain prescriptions while the first-floor pharmacy of the Honolulu Clinic is being renovated.

Members may use smaller satellite pharmacies on the third and fourth floors of the Honolulu Clinic, or they may go to any Kaiser Permanente clinic on the island.

They are encouraged to use mail-order refills, to call in prescriptions via PRESTO or to use Internet refill services.

Denney will speak before autism group

Dr. Colin Denney, executive director of Variety School, will be guest speaker at the monthly meeting of the Autism Society of Hawaii at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Coffee Star, 1372 S. King St.

The discussion will cover such issues as how parents measure the quality of mental health services for their child in the individualized educational program, what happens now that the Felix consent decree has ended and whether parents are still entitled to have a say in their child's program services and placement.

Cancer group needs drivers for 'Angels'

The American Cancer Society's "Angels on Wheels" program needs drivers for three areas: Honolulu Unit, call 432-9154; Central/Leeward, 486-8420; Windward, 262-5124.

The "Angels" provide transportation for cancer patients needing rides to and from a doctor's office, hospital or treatment center. Volunteers must have a driver's abstract from the city and county and a driver's license on the day of training. A dispatcher also is needed.

Speeding blamed in fatal car crash

A 22-year-old man who died in an early-morning, single-car crash on Kamehameha Highway in Kaaawa yesterday was speeding, police said.

The accident happened about 5:18 a.m., when the man was traveling southeast along the highway and rammed his 1993 four-door Saturn into a group of trees, a wall and then a utility pole.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

It's unclear whether alcohol was a factor in the crash.The accident was the year's 48th traffic fatality on Oahu, compared to 35 at the same time last year.

Suspected pipe bomb is found to be a fake

Police called in a military ordnance disposal team from Oahu to investigate what appeared to be a pipe bomb at a Keauhou construction site.

The device measured 9 to 12 inches long and one-half to three-quarters of an inch in diameter and had what appeared to be a fuse inserted. But the ordnance disposal team determined it was a hoax after they examined the device yesterday morning, police said.

The fake pipe bomb was discovered about 11:30 a.m. Friday at the Na Hale o Keauhou construction site.

Police closed off a portion of Alii Drive for about 20 minutes while the disposal team examined the device.

Anyone with information about the incident or who knows who is responsible for the hoax is asked to call the police non-emergency number at 935-3311.

1 dead, 3 injured in Hilo car accident

A two-car crash in Hilo yesterday left one person dead and three others injured, including one critically.

Yasuku Tatsuno, 75, of Hilo, was killed when she ran a stop sign at Kukuau Street and rammed her 1989 Toyota four-door sedan into a 1998 Dodge pickup truck traveling west on Mohouli Street, police said.

The Toyota's 81-year-old female passenger was taken to the Hilo Medical Center in critical condition. The pickup's two occupants, a 59-year-old Hilo man and his 17-year-old passenger, were treated and released at the hospital for minor injuries.

The accident happened about 11 a.m. and Tatsuno was pronounced dead less than two hours later. Police said it was unclear if Tatsuno was wearing her seat belt.

Police closed Mohouli Street for about two hours yesterday to investigate the accident and clear the wrecked vehicles. They said speed and alcohol were not factors in the crash.

Tatsuno is the 18th traffic fatality on the Big Island this year, compared to 25 at the same in 2004.

5 boys escape from correctional facility

Police are looking for five Hawaii Youth Correctional Facility inmates who escaped yesterday afternoon by going over a four-foot high fence.

The boys jumped the fence at the facility's swimming area about 4:50 p.m. and ran into a nearby wooded area, police said. They were last seen wearing gray shorts.

Kailua police, along with the facility's employees, looked for the teens through the day. A police helicopter also assisted in the search.

Police did not have the boys' ages last night or information on their criminal histories.

Man allegedly holds 2 women hostage

A man who allegedly held his girlfriend and his ex-girlfriend against their will in a Wilder Avenue apartment building was arrested Wednesday night.

Police said 39-year-old man held both women, ages 36 and 42, inside the apartment at 1414 Wilder Ave.

The suspect's ex-girlfriend, 42, was able to call 911 after pretending to be asleep in a bedroom. When officers arrived, she ran out of the apartment and the suspect gave himself up to police about 11:45 p.m.
