OHCRA regatta returns to Keehi LagoonThe John D. Kaupiko Regatta, the final event before the Oahu Hawaiian Canoe Racing Association championship, will be held tomorrow at Keehi Lagoon as originally scheduled.Both OHCRA and Na Ohana O Na Hui Wa'a have had to move their regattas due to an infestation of tiny jellyfish. The Kaupiko Regatta had tentatively been scheduled for Nanakuli. Next Saturday's Hui Wa'a championship and OHCRA championship a week from tomorrow likely will be held at Keehi unless officials determine there is again a problem with water quality. The alternate site for both championships is Kailua Beach.
Ching to help at Speed and Quickness CampFormer Hawaii volleyball standout Tony Ching is a guest instructor at this weekend's installments of the Hawaii Speed and Quickness Camp at the University of Hawaii.The sessions today and tomorrow are 8:30 to 10 a.m. (ages 7-12) and 10:30 a.m. to noon (ages 13 over) at Cooke Field. Hawaii judoka second at junior nationalsHawaii finished second last weekend at the U.S. Judo Federation Junior Nationals in Irvine, Calif.The judoka won 68 medals, including 23 gold, in the two-day competition at the Bren Events Center. Powerhouse California placed first with 123 medals, including 37 gold. » Shobukan's Ren Hirokawa and Kayla Mishima will compete in the USA Judo Junior Olympics, July 23-24, in Atlanta. Hirokawa (boys intermediate B, under-38 kg) and Mishima (girls intermediate B, under-48 kg) won gold medals at the U.S. Judo Association's Junior Nationals earlier this month in Toledo, Ohio.
Swim series continues this morningThe Surf & Sea Cup, the third event of the North Shore Swim Series, is scheduled for 9 a.m. today at Haleiwa Beach Park.The 1-mile course goes out to Puena Point and back to the beach. Andrew Lester (22 minutes, 10 seconds) and Ashley Swart (23:38) are the defending champions. The cost is $25. The Web site is www.hawaiiswim.com Bolt, Cone of Silence off to fast start The Bolt and Cone of Silence took the early lead in the Division III and IV races as the second wave of boats in the Centenial Transpacific Yacht Race got under way yesterday in Long Beach, Calif. The Odyssey, which was among the boats that began the 2,225-nautical mile race from California to Honolulu on Monday, continued to hold the overall lead at 1,680 miles from the finish. Yesterday's class leaders were Brown Sugar (Division V), Illusion (Cal 40s), Odyssey (Aloha A), So Far (Aloha B). The Division I and II boats set sail tomorrow.
