UAL asks for more bankruptcy loans

CHICAGO » UAL Corp., parent of United Airlines, said in court documents yesterday that it needs another $310 million in bankruptcy loans to provide a "stable environment" as the company works on its reorganization plan.

UAL, based in Elk Grove Village, Ill., has said it intends to emerge from bankruptcy this fall and indicated this summer that it may need additional money during the exit process. The request, however, is separate from the airline's ongoing pursuit of exit financing.

In court documents filed to the U.S. Bank-ruptcy Court for the Northern District of Illinois, UAL said the additional money would provide the company with time "to complete their restructuring efforts in a systematic and measured way." The money will come in the form of an increase to UAL's existing loans.

30-year fixed rate up to 5.66%

WASHINGTON » Mortgage rates around the country rose for a second straight week but still remain below rates seen a year ago.

In its weekly survey, mortgage giant Freddie Mac reported yesterday that rates on 30-year, fixed-rate mortgages increased to 5.66 percent, up from last week's 5.62 percent. The increases were coming after rates had dipped to 5.53 percent in the last week of June, the lowest point for 30-year mortgages in 14 months.

Except for two weeks in late March, 30-year mortgages have been below 6 percent all year.

Rates on 15-year, fixed-rate mortgages averaged 5.25 percent this week, up from 5.20 percent last week. For one-year adjustable rate mortgages, rates rose to 4.39 percent this week, compared with 4.33 percent last week. Rates on five-year hybrid adjustable rate mortgages averaged 5.15 percent this week, down slightly from 5.19 percent last week.

Marriott earnings decline 14%

COLLEGE PARK, Md. » Marriott International Inc., the world's largest hotel operator by sales, said yesterday its second-quarter earnings fell 14 percent because of charges related to a recent hotel acquisition and an incentive program to upgrade bedding at franchisees. Net income fell to $138 million, or 59 cents a share, from $160 million, or 67 cents a share, a year earlier. Excluding the charges, Marriott said earnings would have been 75 cents a share.
