Outrigger 17s win gold at USA Juniors

The top-seeded Outrigger Canoe Club 17s, led by MVP Spencer McLachlin, defeated Balboa Bay (Calif.) yesterday to win the gold medal in the Open Division at the USA Volleyball Boys Junior Olympic Tournament at Lexington, Ky.

Five of the other Hawaii teams earned a combined two silvers and three bronzes on the final day of play.

Outrigger finished unbeaten at 11-0 in handing Balboa Bay its only loss of the tournament, 21-25, 25-23, 15-12. In the earlier semifinal, Outrigger avenged last year's loss to Synergy in the 16s final, also handing the California team its only loss, 32-30, 17-25, 17-15.

Also named to the all-tournament team were opposite Kawika Shoji, defensive specialist/libero Jordan Inafuku and setter Riley McKibbin. Other members of the team, coached by Chris McLachlin, Charlie Jenkins and Peter Ehrman, are Matt Brown, Elias David, Will Ehrman, Kealii Frank, Jacob Jenkins and Kala McInerny.

Spencer McLachlin, Shoji and Inafuku will next join the rest of the USA Volleyball youth national team at Long Beach State as they prepare for next week's invitational tournament in Brazil.

In other matches yesterday at the Louisville Fair & Exposition Center:

ASICS Rainbows 17s lost in the final of the Club Division to St. Louis High Performance, 25-23, 25-20, to earn the silver medal. It was the only loss for ASICS (9-1), which had defeated St. Louis in the opening match of the event for both teams.

Seeded first in the 15s club division, Ku'ikahi (9-1) suffered its only loss in the semifinals when beaten by Cincinnati Attack 20-25, 25-22, 15-12. Ku'ikahi, which hadn't dropped a set before the semifinal, had defeated Cincinnati earlier 25-13, 25-19.

In the 14s club division, 'Onipa'a claimed the silver after losing to Pitirre of Puerto Rico 26-28, 25-13, 15-7. 'Onipa'a advanced to the final by upsetting Ku'ikahi 25-17, 28-26 in an all-Hawaii semifinal, giving Ku'ikahi the bronze.

Outrigger 14s took the bronze in the Open Division, losing to Pacific Palisades (Calif.) in the semifinal, 25-15, 24-26, 15-10.

In non-medal results, Team Side Out 17s lost to Canada West Dragons 25-17, 25-20 in the club silver bracket's round of 16. 'Onipa'a 17s fell to Ikaika Red of California 225-26, 26-24, 15-9, in the Flight 2 semifinals.

ASICS 14s tied for 11th overall in the Club Division, losing in the semifinals of the bronze bracket to Tool City (Pa.), 26-24, 29-27.

Hawaii junior golfers in Optimist tourney

Twenty-three junior golfers from Hawaii will play July 23-31 in the Optimist International Junior Golf Championships.

An international field of 660 juniors ages 10-18 will hit the PGA National Resort in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. There will be four age divisions.

The Hawaii golfers are Zakry Akagi-Bustin of Wahiawa; Alika Bell of Kaneohe; Ryan Kuroiwa of Aiea; Shunsuke Aonuma, Lorens Chan, Alex Ching, Alina Ching, Marissa Chow, Aaron Hersum, Brandon Isobe, Ayaka Kaneko, Iris Ocariza, Cyd Okino and Bradley Shigezawa of Honolulu; Scotty Yamashita of Kapolei; Rae-Lyn Morikawa and Kelli Oride of Lihue; Sean Ogawa of Kapaa; Alexander Chiarella of Makawao; Kelcie Ann Kawano of Kahului; Kyung Kim of Wailuku; and Amanda Lerma of Keaau.

» Masahiro Tokunaga prevailed after a third hole playoff over Motomasa Aoki Tuesday to win a U.S. Senior Open Championship Sectional at Mauna Lani Resort. Tokunaga qualified for the U.S. Senior Open July 25-31 at NCR Country Club in Kettering, Ohio.

Both shot identical 36-37--73 rounds.

Stan Souza was a shot back as second alternate. Don Brown shot a 75 as third alternate, and Kirk Smith also shot a 75 as fourth alternate and low scoring amateur.

Ex-Wahine Carey on Texas A&M staff

Former Hawaii setter Jennifer Carey has joined the Texas A&M staff as the Director of Volleyball Operations.

Carey played for the Rainbow Wahine from 1999 through 2002 and is fourth in career assists (3,540). She was heavily recruited by Texas A&M before deciding on Hawaii.

Carey was the starting freshman setter on the 29-2 Wahine team that was upset in the regional final in the Stan Sheriff Center by Texas A&M.

The Aggies' associate head coach is former Honolulu resident and Punahou graduate John Corbelli.
