Irons, Patacchia grab first-round victories

Reigning three-time world champion Andy Irons of Kauai dominated his first-round heat yesterday to advance all the way to the third round of the Billabong Pro at Jeffreys Bay in South Africa.

Irons, the defending champion of the Association of Surfing Professionals' World Championship Tour event, easily defeated Shaun Payne and Darren O'Rafferty.

Another Hawaii surfer, Fred Patacchia Jr., also won his first-round heat to make it into the third round.

Bruce Irons, Andy's brother, and Kalani Robb placed second in their first-round heats yesterday, but still advanced to the second round.

Hawaii's Ian Walsh, a wild-card entrant, finished third in his heat and also moved ahead to the second round.

Fujii leads Movers to second win in Osaka

Kevin Fujii collected hits in all four of his trips to the plate and the Hawaii Island Movers shut out Otemon Gakuin 3-0 in Osaka, Japan, Sunday.

Atsushi Shinomoto and Yuji Tanaka limited Otemon to four hits for the Movers, who improved to 2-0 on their trip.

3 Hawaii Junior Olympics teams undefeated

Outrigger Canoe Club 17s remained unbeaten in the open division yesterday, one of three Hawaii teams that are taking a perfect record into today's medal round of the USA Volleyball Boys Junior Olympic Tournament in Louisville, Ky.

OCC, which hasn't dropped a set, swept its two matches yesterday to improve to 8-0.

ASICS Rainbows 17s, 7-0 in the club division, also hasn't dropped a set. ASICS is the top seed going into today's play, as is Ku'ikahi 15s (9-0) in the club division.

Ku'ikahi 14s (7-2) take on another Hawaii team, 'Onipa'a (6-3), in a championship bracket semifinal in the club division.

ASICS 14s went 2-4 yesterday to fall into the quarterfinals of the bronze bracket while 'Onipa'a (4-5) advanced to the quarters of Flight 2.

Outrigger's 14s (7-2) advanced to the semifinals of the open division championship bracket. Side Out (4-5) slipped into the round of 16 in the silver bracket of the 17s club division

ASICS Rainbows 12s (4-3) took the bronze medal in the club division yesterday after falling to eventual champion Borinquen Coqui of Puerto Rico 4-0.
