Transpac Race centennial gets under wayThirty-five of the near-record 75 entries are scheduled to leave Los Angeles for Honolulu tomorrow as the 2,225-nautical mile Transpacific Yacht Race begins the first of its three staggered starts.The smaller boats set sail off Palos Verdes Peninsula at 10 a.m. HST. The 20 Division III and IV racers get under way Friday with the remaining 20 yachts off next Sunday. There are six entries from Hawaii among the 75, which is the second-highest number since the event began in 1906. The most entries (80) were in 1979. The oldest boat is Odyssey, a 58-foot yawl that sailed Transpac in 1939, '55 and '61. The wooden classic returns with a crew counting 53 Transpacs among them, including Scott Abrams, grandson of Clarence Macfarlane, who organized the first race. The record is 7 days, 11 hours 41 minutes and 27 seconds, set by Pyewacket in 1999. The finish line is off Diamond Head with the fleet moored at the Ala Wai Boat Harbor.
Chun, Kim finish well off pace in junior golfRecent Kamehameha graduate Mari Chun and Kimberly Kim of Pahoa struggled in the inclement weather on Hilton Head Island, S.C., yesterday, as the AJGA Rolex Tournament of Champions' final round was shortened to nine holes.After tee times were delayed by 3 hours, 18-year-old Chun had three bogeys to finish with a 39--257, sharing 14th with Tiffany Joh and 10 strokes behind winner Esther Choe. The 13-year-old Kim bogeyed five holes, including the last three, for a 41--258, finishing in 16th place on the Long Cove Club course.
Pilipa'a takes bronze medal at J.O. volleyballThe Pilipa'a Volleyball Club 18s finished third in the club division gold bracket yesterday at the USA Volleyball Junior Olympic Tournament in Louisville, Ky.The Hilo team finished 10-1, losing its only match in the semifinals to eventual winner Ponce Leone of Puerto Rico, 23-25, 26-24, 15-8. Named to the all-tournament team were setter Treston Yasso and middle blocker Napua Canda. ASICS Rainbows 18s (9-3) won the silver bracket of the club division, defeating Tool City, to finish ninth overall. Molten 18s (6-4) lost its quarterfinal in the silver bracket to share fifth place, 13th overall. Outrigger Canoe Club 18s (8-4) won the bronze bracket of the club division, defeating Mizuno SPVB, for 17th place overall. OCC 16s (6-3) lost its quarterfinal match in the gold bracket of the open division, tying for fifth.
Ramos, football on Quarterback Club daisRetiring Kamehameha Schools principal Tony Ramos, who is also stepping down as president of the Interscholastic League of Honolulu and Hawaii High School Athletic Association executive board, is among the guest speakers at tomorrow's Honolulu Quarterback Club meeting at the Pagoda Hotel.Also speaking will be Moanalua High head football coach Arnold Martinez and former Hawaii football player Brian Derby, organizer of the Brian Derby Offensive Lineman Clinic. Lunch begins at 11:30 a.m., followed by the noon program.
Island Movers open Osaka stop with winMatt Alling homered and the Hawaii Island Movers opened their stay in Osaka, Japan, with an 11-8 victory over Osaka Gakuin University yesterday. The Movers had seven doubles among their 11 hits. Mike Lam pitched 6 2/3 innings to earn the win in relief.
Iacovelli, Christensen tops in Jamba Juice 5KTodd Iacovelli edged Matt Stevens by less than 6 seconds to win the Jamba Juice 5-kilometer Banana Man Chase at Ala Moana Park yesterday.Iacovelli finished the 3.1-mile run in 13 minutes, 29.9 seconds, with Stevens crossing the line in 15:35.4. The top female finisher was Nina Christensen in 18:05.9.
Polo at Waimanalo grounds todayThe Naturally Hawaii League Tournament continues today at the Honolulu Polo Club grounds in Waimanalo.Gates open at 1 p.m. with matches starting at 2:30 p.m. General admission is $3. Children under 12 and military personnel with a valid I.D. are admitted free.
Allen Allen volleyball camps on OahuFormer Hawaii All-American Allen Allen will bring two volleyball skills camps to Oahu later this month. The camps are open to beginning and intermediate players, ages 18 and under. Among the coaches will be former UH players Tony Ching and Heidi Ilustre.The July 25-26 camp is at King Intermediate.
