Ready for Action

There is at least one mobile rescue unit on duty daily for each of Oahu's four lifeguard districts (Leeward, North, Windward and South). Two lifeguards are assigned to each mobile unit and receive special training on rescue techniques using a personal watercraft. They assist tower-based lifeguards in their district and also respond to calls at unguarded beaches and offshore up to one mile. Equipment for Honolulu lifeguards mobile rescue unit:

1 Rescue watercraft
2 Rescue sled: holds person or people being rescued
3 Beach dolly: to get rescue craft across sand to ocean (in pickup bed)
4 Four-wheel-drive pickup truck
5 Radio with harness and waterproof pouch
6 Binoculars
7 Rescue tube
8 Fins, mask and snorkel
9 Tow rope
10 Safety knife
11 First-aid kits
12 Wet suit
13 Backboard
14 Rescue board
15 Oxygen

Not shown: cervical collar and AED (automatic external defibrillator)
