Fireworks displays will cap
4th of July festivities
If you didn't get your fill of fireworks over the weekend, just keep your eyes on the skies tonight, when pyrotechnic displays will light up the night to the north, south and east from about 8:30 to 9 p.m.:
» Kailua fireworks: Head to Kailua Beach Park or any stretch of sand in the vicinity for the aerial show beginning at 8 p.m. today. It will be preceded by the 6th Twilight Airshow at 6 p.m., with pilots Hank Bruckner and Clint Churchill performing 30 minutes of aviation acrobatics. Free.
» Ala Moana Center's Fourth of July Fireworks Show: The center continues its 14-year tradition with a display that's being touted as the third largest in the United States, behind New York City and Boston.
Take in the show from the mall-level, makai parking deck fronting Sears, the biggest viewing deck in the city where there will be entertainment beginning at noon, plus a 6-8:30 p.m. concert featuring the U.S. Navy Pacific Fleet Band, Dita Holifield and Red-Handed, Makaha Sons, Go Jimmy Go and Eight O Eight.
The fireworks display will be the work of Pyro Spectaculars by Souza, a California-based company that has created displays for cities, theme parks and events across the country, including the Olympics, the Super Bowl, Disneyland and dozens of Hollywood films.
The fireworks are set to go off at 8:30 p.m.
» 34th annual Fourth of July Spectacular: Day-long celebration at Schofield Barracks' Sills Field features crafts and pony rides, a new-products bazaar, displays of vintage military vehicles and other family-friendly events, with entertainment by Kalaeloa at noon, Courtney and Friends at 1 p.m., Tani Lynn and Jordan Segundo at 2 p.m. and Opihi Pickers at 3 p.m.
In addition, performers from past Army Community Theatre productions such as "Miss Saigon" stars Shawna Matsuda, Sam Hesch and Fran Gendrano, and Sherry Chock from "The King & I," will be joined by Leon Williams and the Tropic Lightning Band performing "From Broadway to Iraq" in two acts at 5:05 and 7 p.m.
There will also be a "Salute to Units" that served in Iraq and Afghanistan at 6:30 p.m., narrated by Jayme Alexander and Grace Austin, and the "1812 Overture" will sound at 7:45 p.m. Event producer Vanita Rae Smith wrote "The Flags We Follow," to be narrated by Jo Pruden and Jayme Alexander before the fireworks at 8:30 p.m. today. Admission is free.
» Pearl Harbor block party: Festivities, including music, HCW wrestling, carnival games, arts and crafts, and food, are just for military-affiliated personnel, family and sponsored guests from 2 to 9 p.m. today, but anyone in the vicinity might be able to spot the fireworks at 8:30 p.m. Free.
