PGA Tour with
a little punch
SO K-1 is coming to town, featuring my hero and yours, Akebono. That's great.
Now what the heck is K-1?
It's a form of mixed martial arts fighting, according to the K-1 USA Web site, that draws on "karate, kickboxing, tae kwon do and kung fu."
But it's also a brand, a league, a group of barnstorming mixed martial artists that travels from town to town together, forming bonds of camaraderie. And when they get to each town, they compete against each other.
"It's like the PGA Tour," K-1's Scott Coker explained when he was here last year.
Ah, yes. I get it now. And I've always thought the PGA Tour was missing something. And now I finally realize what that something is.
Karate, kickboxing, tae kwon do and kung fu.
» Disappointing for the man personally, but good news for the rest of us selfishly, that Hawaii associate athletic director Tom Sadler didn't get the big job at Montana, and is staying at UH.
I've been nothing but impressed with this guy, and UH would miss him if he left.
Sadler is straightforward and low-key. He doesn't break a sweat trying to impress you with how impressive he is. He just does it. He's a George Ariyoshi campaign slogan -- quiet, but effective.
He doesn't think saying the right thing is a sign of weakness. And I'm glad he's there.
» Can't wait to see the new TV commercials starring Butch and Sundance -- um, I mean Jerry Glanville and June Jones. Sounds like the filming was a lot of fun.
This is good news. First, because Jones should be selling us on attending games in person. This kind of commercial fits the bill exactly.
Second, when you've got Glanville, you use him, and it sounds like Jones is. We knew UH could use Glanville on the field (No. 116) -- but hopefully this guy can help off it, too.
With his stature and sense of humor he might be able to take on a little of the load and relieve a lot of the tension.
If Jones finds his blood pressure rising a little after dealing with incessant media types he can just throw Glanville at us. A few Elvis stories, and everybody's smiling again.
The renewal of their old partnership should be fun to watch.
