Woman is victim
of phony credit firm
Star-Bulletin staff
Police are warning the public about a fake company that claims to help solve financial problems for people with good or bad credit.
Police said the company called Royal Express Confidential ran an ad in a local paper with a 1-866 number.
A Honolulu woman called the number and was instructed to send $750 to secure a $5,000 loan.
Although the "company" purported to originate in New Jersey, the woman was told to send the money to a North York, Ontario, Canada, address, police said.
The woman changed her mind and tried to get her money back, but after calling the Better Business Bureau in New Jersey, she learned there was no such company, police said.
Anyone with information about the case is asked to call CrimeStoppers at 955-8300 or *CRIME on a cell phone.
Police have provided the following tips and information to avoid becoming a victim:
» Legitimate companies never ask to pay insurance, processing fees or taxes when applying for a loan.
» Whenever a letter warns to keep information confidential, that is a red flag.
» Money that is wired can be controlled by the recipient and picked up anywhere in the world.
» When in doubt, check with the local Better Business Bureau before sending money or information to companies you have not solicited.
