Catfish application deadline is July 22

Applications for weekend catfish fishing at Nuuanu Reservoir will be taken through July 22 for the late summer-fall season.

Everyone who applies for a fishing slot will be assigned one weekend morning or afternoon beginning with Aug. 13 and continuing until all applicants get a slot.

Only those with an entry fishing card from the Department of Land and Natural Resources and valid freshwater fishing licenses will be allowed.

Anglers who want to catch the stocked catfish can get applications for entry fishing cards at the Division of Aquatic Resources, 1151 Punchbowl St., Room 330. Applications must be returned by 4 p.m. July 22, and a lottery drawing will then be held to assign each cardholder a fishing date and time. Details about fishing license types and costs are available at the office.

Anglers must participate during the period they are assigned to fish. There will be no make-up periods or refunds.

The bag limit is two channel catfish per licensed angler.

Each fishing day will be divided into two four-hour fishing periods, 7 to 11 a.m. and noon to 4 p.m. Warm clothing and rain gear are recommended.

Swimmer, 74, found floating offshore dies

A 74-year-old swimmer who was found floating off Waikiki Beach last Friday has died.

The Waikiki man was a regular swimmer and was found floating in the ocean.

He was brought to shore and taken to Straub Hospital, where he died yesterday morning.

Police said no suspicious circumstances were apparent.

Investigators confirm arson in building fire

The Wednesday night fire that destroyed a two-story abandoned wooden building at 2909 Old Waialae Road was intentionally set, a fire official said.

Fire investigators discovered multiple places where the fire originated and suspect the use of an ignitable liquid, said fire Capt. Kenison Tejada.

Damage to the structure was estimated at $100,000.

Witnesses reported seeing homeless individuals living in the building, Tejada said.

Police are also investigating the fire.

Man commits suicide after alleged stabbing

A 28-year-old man who allegedly ambushed his ex-girlfriend in her car and stabbed her with a box cutter Wednesday committed suicide afterward, Honolulu police said.

The suspect went to the victim's home at about 6:25 a.m. and hid in her vehicle, police said. When she got to her car, the suspect confronted her and forced her to ride in the passenger seat while he drove around the Kaimuki area and attacked her with the box cutter, according to police.

The suspect eventually drove to Ewa Beach where he released the victim to his father, who was working at a construction site. The suspect's father took the victim to the St. Francis-West Medical Center, where she was treated for a deep stab wound to her left thigh and cuts to her hands, police said.

Police later found the body of the suspect after he hanged himself in the brush near an Ewa Beach community park.

Man arrested following alleged sexual assault

Honolulu police arrested a 30-year-old Kalihi man for allegedly sexually assaulting his ex-girlfriend.

Police said that about 11 a.m. March 16, the suspect was invited by the victim, age 17, to her home in Aiea. Once there the suspect sexually assaulted the victim, police said.

Police arrested the suspect Wednesday for investigation of second-degree sexual assault. He was also arrested for violating his parole and probation revocation.

Human remains found in Kailua by a hiker

A hiker found human remains off Akumu Place in Enchanted Lake in Kailua.

The 30-year-old man said he found them about 3:45 p.m. Wednesday. Police said the bones could be ancient, and are awaiting the results of tests to determine their age.

Suspected car thief escapes during chase

Police were looking for a 26-year-old suspected car thief who escaped during a Tuesday afternoon police ground and air chase in Waimanalo.

Officers spotted a stolen car about 5 p.m. at Makapuu Beach Park at 41-095 Kalanianaole Highway.

Police dispatched a helicopter, Specialized Services Division and K-9 teams to assist.

The helicopter followed the car to 41-524 Poalima St. in Waimanalo, where the driver abandoned the car and fled on foot.

Police, including SSD and K-9 units, formed a perimeter, but the suspect eluded police. The suspect has no local address and four prior arrests.

The 2001 green four-door Dodge Neon had been stolen from 46-229 Kahuhipa St. in Kaneohe about 11:30 p.m. Monday, police said.

Police charge man in alleged flashing

Police charged a 29-year-old man with exposing himself on a city bus earlier this month.

Police said Carl Weiss exposed himself to a 19-year-old woman about 1:30 p.m. June 20 as they were riding on a bus near the junction of Kamehameha and Likelike highways.

On Monday the woman spotted the same suspect on the bus and called police, who arrested him for investigation of fourth-degree sexual assault, a misdemeanor. Weiss's bail was set at $500.
