KKEA's Robbs receives AVCA media award

Scott Robbs, the radio play-by-play announcer for Hawaii men's and women's volleyball, has been selected as recipient of the American Volleyball Coaches Association Grant Burger Media Award.

Robbs, who broadcasts for KKEA 1420-AM, was one of four finalists for the national award. The others were Sandy Gohlston (print), of the Big Rapids (Mich.) Pioneer, CSTV.com (web); and Ohio State's D.C. Koehl (sports information).

"I'm very humbled and appreciative of this honor," Robbs said. "It helps that both the Wahine and men's volleyball programs are successful and generate such interest nationally. And the Internet has helped greatly with the exposure."

Robbs began announcing Rainbow Wahine and Warrior road matches in 1999 when he lived in Las Vegas, along with UH road games in baseball, softball and women's basketball. In 2002, he moved to Honolulu started doing all of the men's and women's matches full-time.

Retired Jazz guard Stockton at camp

The Basketball Essential Skills Camp, hosted by retired Utah Jazz All-Star John Stockton, is scheduled for next week at Manoa Valley District Park.

The July 6-8 camp is open to youngsters ages 10 -17 and runs from 8 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. each day. The registration fee is $325 and includes a T-shirt, certificate and autograph by Stockton, who retired as the NBA's career leader in assists and steals.

U.S. water polo advances in world league

The U.S. men's water polo team, with Punahou School product Brandon Brooks as starting goalie, advanced to the semifinal round of the FINA World League.

The U.S. finished third in its group, with wins over Italy and Brazil at the competition in Stuttgart, Germany. The semifinals are next week in Long Island, N.Y., with the U.S. in round-robin play against Hungary, Russia, Croatia and Italy. The top three teams advance to the Super Final, Aug. 11-14, at Belgrade, Serbia & Montenegro.

Baseball coaches clinic in Hapuna

A free youth baseball coaches clinic, featuring Stanford's Mark Marquess and retired UCLA coach Gary Adams, is scheduled for July 23 at the Hapuna Prince Hotel's Hau Lehua Room.

Others participating in the four-hour event are Mark O'Brien (Santa Clara), Sam Piraro (San Jose State), Rich Price (Kansas), Ed Sprague (Pacific), Chad Konishi (Hawaii assistant) and former Dodgers pitcher Tim Leary.

Youth clinic follows: The coaches clinic is a prelude to the Kalae Iki Youth Clinic, July 24-26 at the Kailua-Kona Parks & Recreation regulation baseball field. This camp is free for boys and girls aged 7-17 and will also feature the coaches from the previous clinic.

Registration is at Parks & Recreation offices in Kailua-Kona, Waimea and Hilo. The application deadline is July 20.

Military Appreciation Day at polo grounds

The Hawaii Polo Inn will take on JN Automotive Sunday, Military Appreciation Day, at the Hawaii Polo Club's grounds at Mokuleia.

All military personnel will receive free admission. Gates open at 11 a.m. followed by the game at 2 p.m.
