No hurry on
stadium rent issue
The agenda for tomorrow's Aloha Stadium Authority meeting lists University of Hawaii football rent among unfinished business.
It will remain that way for some time.
UH will be represented at the meeting by associate athletic director Tom Sadler, but not much action is expected this month on the issue of rent relief for the Warriors. UH pays the greater of 7 1/2 percent of ticket receipts or $10,000 per game to rent the stadium, plus expenses.
Two months ago, the authority voted to change the arrangement at UH's request. At last month's meeting, the board instructed athletic director Herman Frazier to bring forth a proposal. Frazier said he'd have something together in "30 days or so."
The proposal is still being worked on, department spokeswoman Lois Manin said.
"I don't think there's discussion that we're initiating at this point," she said. "Tom will be there, but there's no proposal yet."
The last month has been a busy one administratively for the UH athletic department. Frazier and his staff wrapped up a new TV contract, booked a football game at Florida and negotiated a new contract for basketball coach Riley Wallace. Frazier's own contract was also renewed for five years.
Also, the proposal did not have to be labeled a rush job, since the authority said rent relief could only come as early as the 2006 season, anyway.
Also tomorrow, the board is expected to approve FEGProdigy Productions' K-1 World Grand Prix event for July 29. It will also continue work on the proposed increase of Swap Meet admission fees from 50 cents to $1.
It is the final meeting for board members Tony Guerrero (chairman), Robin Campaniano and Carole Kai-Onouye. Their replacements are Kathleen Ahina, Marcia Klompus and Nelson Oyadomari.
