REVERED KUPUNA: Mary Lou Kekuewa, left, and Maria Artis were guests of honor Saturday at the Ahahui Kaahumanu Centennial Anniversary Ball at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel. The group traces its roots back to the mid-19th century but dates the founding of the modern organization to 1905. Kekuewa, who attended the celebration with her daughter, Paulette Kahalepuna, has been a Life Member for 56 years. Artis has been a Life Member for 59.

WELCOME BACK, JOE!: Palani Vaughan, left, Nalani Olds and Joe Recca talked backstage after performing in the formal program saluting the legacy of Hawaii's alii. The show was Recca's first full-length performance since he was treated for cancer several years ago, and he was in top form as singer, dancer and emcee. Recca even called Cha Thompson up on stage for a number.

MEANWHILE, OUT BY THE DESSERT BAR: Lani Alii Sir Edward L. Akana of the Royal Order of Kamehameha was greeted by Kanoe Cazimero at her table on the lawn. Cazimero danced an impromptu hula to "Mahina O Hoku" while the Van Horn Diamond Trio performed during dinner.

HONORING THE ALII: Sina Eseroma, left, portrayed Princess Ruth, and Misty Mokihana Thompson-Tufono was Queen Kapiolani, as part of the after-dinner enterainment honoring Hawaii's alli and recalling the history and accomplishments of Ahahui Kaahumanu.
