Bussey, Woods qualify for U.S. kayak team

Andy Bussey of Kailua and Kaneohe's Brandon Woods were part of the winning men's K-4 kayak yesterday as the U.S. Flatwater Sprint Team Trials concluded at Lake Placid, N.Y.

Athletes finishing first in each event are nominated to compete for the U.S. team next month's Pan-American Championships in Quebec, Canada. Athletes are then nominated for the World Championships in August in Croatia.

Bussey, Woods, Jeff Smoke and Daniel Krawczyk won the 1,000-meter race by a boat length.

"Our boat was broken," Woods said. "We beached it training in Miami. But we were able to get it fixed in time to train for this race. This should be a really good boat, and I'm excited to see how our potential plays out at Worlds [Championships]."

Smoke and Bussey also combined to win the men's K-2 1000, outracing the second place boat of Krawczyk and Woods to the line.

On Saturday, Smoke edged Bussey in the K-1 1,000 while Woods finished fourth after being beaten by an inch by Rami Zur. Friday saw Bussey take third in the 500.

Dolan qualifies, too: Kailua's Patrick Dolan will be nominated for the U.S. Junior Sprint World Championship Team following his performance at the trials this past weekend. Although complete results were not available, the Maryknoll High student placed second in several events to qualify for the team that will compete in Hungary in August.

Elam, West added to Japan-USA Bowl team

Former Hawaii football plays Matt Elam and John West have been added to Team USA Hawaii for the July 14 Japan-USA Bowl in Tokyo.

Running back West led UH in rushing for two seasons (2002-03) while lineman Elam was a part of the 1999 Warriors team that defeated Oregon State in the Oahu Bowl.

Team USA Hawaii is an all-volunteer squad that will play a Japanese team from the X-League (formerly NFL Japan).

Robb shares 33rd at surf meet

Hawaii's Kalani Robb was eliminated after yesterday' second round of the Association of Surfing Professionals Fosters Men's World Championship Tour stop at St. Leu, Reunion Island.

Robb lost to rookie Tim Reyes (USA) and had to settle for equal 33rd and $3,600 in prize money.

Surfing was postponed today. Andy and Bruce Irons and Fred Patacchia Jr. are among the several Hawaii competitors still alive.
