NORTH SHORE
2 rappelers injured in fall down cliff
Two men who were rappelling down a cliff behind Camp Erdman in Waialua yesterday fell between 75 and 100 feet, leaving them in serious but stable condition.
The accident happened about 6 p.m., and it took nearly two hours to get them out of mountainous terrain and into an awaiting helicopter.
They were airlifted to the Queen's Medical Center.
The men were rappelling with a group of about 10 to 15 others, fire officials said. The cliff where the men fell had about a 70 percent grade.
One of the men was in his mid-30s, while the other was about 25 years old, an Emergency Medical Services supervisor said.
Firefighters were taken into the site -- a narrow valley -- by helicopter to assess the men's injuries. The men and rescuers were then airlifted to an awaiting ambulance, where they were stabilized.
The men were flown to Queen's about 8:10 p.m.
A witness told the EMS supervisor that the rope the men were using apparently broke. Battalion Chief Thomas Perkins, a Fire Department spokesman, could not confirm the account. He did say the group told firefighters that they had been to the site several times before to rappel.
